In this case, I side with Nikon USA. They have to protect themselves and to do so, they have made it abundantly clear in advance that they will not touch a Nikon bought in a way that undermines their business.

I have to say that I can understand companies not honouring warranties on grey market goods. Refusing to do a paid repair on their products, though, is a bit beyond the line. If it *is* a genuine product, and not a knock-off, then the company should be prepared to stand behind their product and handle any reasonable repair. Providing the customer is prepared to pay the price for it.

Just my opinion, but I would feel pretty unhappy about this situation too...

Sorry to hear of your debacle, but at least I can say I did try to warn you. I belive I also told you that any Nikon Authorized Service Center would do the repairs for you, just NOT the Nikon USA Warranty Centers in Melville or El Segundo. Nikon USA is an independant corporation from Nikon Japan and pays a LOT of money to have exclusive US Distribution rights for Nikon products. They are also fully responsiblr for warranty repairs on all those products and its the salesprofits that pay for all those repairs when needed. When an UNAUTHORIZED importer buys a container full of Nikon gear in Singapore or Manila and ships them here to sell at a discount they are not responsible for making warranty repairs so they can sell them cheap. Why should Nikon USA have to pay the cost of repairs to those items? They shouldn't, and they don't.
When you buy a Nikon product you get a physical Nikon USA warranty slip inside the box with amatching serial number. If you don't get that slip you bought grey market and will be out of luck for any repair at any time. Warranty repairs require TWO items, that slip AND an original receipt with your nameon it and from an authorized retailer.
As a camera dealer I can assure you I never take an item inon trade without that proof of USA purchase entirely to assure whoever buys that item from me will never have an issue with future service.
My 5th D600 is on its way back from Nikon with a new shutter as I writethis. At no time did any of them show any more dust than any other DSLR I rent out or own personally, regardless of brand, but the work was free and Iincludes a free CLA to boot so they all went in one at a time. Kudos to Nikon for doing so, and replacing some with D610s for those that cry the loudest.
The key when you buy ANYTHING online is, prepare to be ripped off 50% of the time and you will never be disappointed if you do. Always buy from reputable sellers. And ANYTIME something is priced significantly lower than every where else, there is a good reason for it, and that reason is never going to be good.
So lick your wounds and enjoy your gear, get it cleaned and serviced if needed, or sell it all and downgrade to Canon if you want, its all your choice anyway.
Sorry to hear of your debacle, but at least I can ... (show quote)

Are you sure that wasn't "upgrade" to Canon? :-D :-D

When your in NYC there are authorized repair sites. One of them is Phototech Camera Repair at 110 East 13th Street NYC
212-673-8400 they will clean your sensor, check your back focus issue and upgrade your firmware. There also is another one located across the street from B&H on 34th Street don't remember there name. Phototech I have used for a Fuji camera and they are very good. Customers who were coming in for a cleaning were told they could wait or come back later to pick up.

Did you buy your Nikon for it's Warranty or for it's ability to take quality photos? From what I've heard and read, I don't believe Nikon's customer service will win any awards. Don't take it personally (which you seem to have done quite extensively) just get out there and use your camera for the purpose it was meant to be used for.

WHAAAATTT? Comparing Rolex repairing fake watches to Nikon refusing to repair cameras made in the same factory as USA models?? Come on.
MT Shooter wrote:
I once read that 88% of the Rolex watches were fake, 95% in the USA. You think Rolex would repair any of them no matter how the customer complained?

This post actually goes out to Jerryc41, MTshooter and Davidpine all who took the time to answer me when I raised the question about if I had a grey market Nikon D-90 ...cut for brevity

So now
1) If you need service you have a choice of service center, just not Nikon warranty service.
2) You have good glass that will last for years and will work with other Nikon camera bodies;
3) You have learned that 'you get what you pay for' - unfortunate but true.

Good luck. Do the firmware upgrade yourself. Seek out a local photographer who can help you check focus. Setting up back button focus requires only a check of the manual and a few button clicks.

Good Luck!

B&H sells grey market merchandise. Call them and see if they can help you. If they can't they probably can tell you where to have it fixed. Never buy Grey Market camera gear unless it's from a firm like B&H that will stand behind it. Good luck.

if Nikon made it, the last thing they should is leave someone hanging out there. so they don't warrentee it, they can still fix it at a cost to the costumer.

Sorry you got caught in the web of international distributorship. There are several item groups that will only honor the specific warranty of the company through which you purchased the sales. In your case, your Nikon can be CLA'd or repaired by any number of Nikon Authorized Repair Stations throughout the country. These are not fly-by-night companies who just happen to have a "Nikon Technician" on staff; they are established companies that have equalled or exceeded Nikon's rigid criteria. Like I said, they will CLA your camera, BUT YOU WILL PAY FOR IT. If you had a Nikon USA warranty, NikonUSA would pay the bill; you don't, you will! You will receive the same high quality service you would get from ANY Nikon repair station. New parts will be Nikon OEM, and you might even get a repair site warranty (30-90 days) on parts and labor. In Sacramento, CA, that warranty station is shown below. I have done business with them for many years and have NEVER been disappointed.

Thank God there is no actual ink being spent here, just virtual ink!
The OP sure has got his $27.00 worth on this subject!
I am surprised nobody here seems to consider the import/export rules and regs and the penalties that go along with bypassing any of this!
After many decades of regulation I am sure "Big Name" product companies know where their interests are and they do not want to draw the attention of the Feds in their business!
A lone noisemaker here and there such as the OP is just a nuisance but is still Illegal activity and his camera could just be confiscated by anybody in the business!!!
Btw, nobody "Exiled" him although that would be a good idea!

I sure got $27 worth of responses. Hey I told Jerry, MT, and Dave that I would report back to them, I value their opinions as I do all of you UHHers. Ok so I got a little dramatic. But I never thought that this would create the hailstorm of responses that it did WOW! And this is why I love all you fellow readers who so dramatically responded. Isn't this a great forum? By the way what's an OP? Thanks to all of you who replied so passionately, now let's have a virtual toast with a nice glass of virtual wine, calm down and make some pictures. Thanks again to all.

Wow I hardly ever post on this forum but I read it daily. This is Alan interesting discussion, but I have to tell you from an outsider point of view the responses to this guys post were snarky at best. His original complaint, from what I read, was that Nikon could have figured out it was a gray market item by checking the serial, number when he emailed them for a return authorization! which they could have. Pretty sure they had the same computer system when he emailed them as when they received the camera after he sent it, and he wouldn't have had to fork over $27 for shipping. I personally think his complaint is 100% valid. The responses from this forum? "Neener Neener we told you so' not to buy gray market". Way to step it up and offer solutions... He already said that he realized he made a mistake--I counted 3 times if not 4 in his original post.

I originally joined this forum because I love my Nikon 5100 and thought it would be fun to get tips from other photographers. But for the past year when I read some of these posts I feel like we're all back in junior high. I love the constructive answers I read, the snarky responses, not so much.
