I took this shot late today and the light was dropping off fast. I think this is a Black Scoter but I am not sure. I hope to return next weekend to get some better pictures. At least these will do to ID it. Thanks Mike

Looking at my copy of Peterson's, you are right. The painting there fits exactly.

The comon scoter is noteworthy for being the only American duck with entirely black plumage. It also has a yellow orange knob at the base of its bill.

Since there is no yellow orange knob at the base of the bill I have to agree that it is an American Coot. Thanks everyone! This place is great just ask a question and within minutes you have answers pouring in !!! Thanks everyone for your help!!

The closest I could get to an ID was a white winged scoter, but that does not fit either. These guys don't appear in any of my references. According to references scoters appear more or less world wide, and other references might turn up something foreign that fits. Either that or I missed something. Imagine that!

I see that according to the Audubon folks as far as scoters are named, black scoter is now prefered over calling them common.
