If you are going to use a range doubler, get one that fits between the lens and camera body.
Why?
1 - The camera knows it is there
2 - it does not cause excessive weight on AF motor
Either way it will steal some light from you, I would guess that a front mount unit would steal more light and may be more difficult to focus through.
This is a FANTASTIC paper weight.

May not be heavy enough...

Good point.
OK, let's think this through - a Nikon 2x converter is over $400 and this is $17.00.
Probably about right - this would be about 4% as good.
Its junk. Will only fit a 52mm, so what will you put it on, a 50?

Canon sells tubes that fit on the front of their high end P&S cameras and allow use of a lens filter. I use one to protect the lens mechanism from my kid. A camera with a similar setup would be a good candidate for using this.
You could always paint it white and sell it for a profit.

How's that for a set of answers, Stef? These things are really not very good - they're just big hunks of convex glass that fit over your front element. I have one around here somewhere that came as part of the 'kit' when I got my XTi about 4 years ago. I probably took a few shots with it and realized that it was like shooting through the bottom of a Coke bottle.
Save your money. It's seems like for $17 what's the difference, but then you just start to get swept into the whole "cheap accessory" game.
If you really must have one, and I can find mine, you can have it. It's probably a 58mm thread though, if your 55-200 is 52mm it won't fit without a step-down ring.
