Cut down on the exposure, if you used flash, use a faster shutter speed, maybe also use a 1/2 cut CTO.

arm position screams selfie and post processing screams instagram selfie.

There is a door frame(?) growing out of her head, the skin tone is unnatural and the white balance is way off.

I know, Annie. Tact has never been one of my strong points. But given the previous critique and the camera is too high and not level, it's time to start over. After all, the model is always available. :)

First of all, and unlike the other members who failed to properly respond to your post, let me welcome you to UHH. I would suggest that you go to your profile page and indicate a location (at least the State) instead of "in hiding". Lets the members get an idea of you area, and who knows you might find a close by photographer friend.

Now for the question that you asked and the help that you expressly sought, you posted to the wrong forum. I would suggest that you take a look at the Post Production digital forum, down toward the bottom of the forums list. Unlike some, the people who hang out there are helpful, they not only talk the talk, they can walk the walk. . .unlike some.

You wanted to know what, if anything, you could do with your posted image. Everyone ignored you, and focused on their own misguided humor and snide remarks. I would offer an apology to you, but these people are not worth it. In time you will understand the total lack of ability of some here who run the biggest mouths.

Now for you image. Yes, there are a number of things that you could do. Yes, you have much to learn, but being hit with non-responsive snide comments isn't helping you, and it only shows these people's ignorance.

I have taken your thumbnail image, and worked on it in post production. Below is my rendering of the image that shows suggested tighter crop, and conversion to b&w, and other pleasing enhancements. I now see this as a saved and workable image, of a lovely lady.

Should you wish, or have other questions please feel free to PM me.

Ken

I expected that kind of response from someone. 75% critique of the critique, followed by a couple of lines on "pleasing enhancements" which consisted of removing 75% of the image and all color and detail, replacing it with a splotchy vignette, border and too much framing. And of course your screaming red watermark on a B&W image that shouts, "I'm more important than the image." Feeling properly superior now?

Thanks Ken for your input. I appreciated the guidance of all as I start out on my journey in photography. I know that I have a lot to learn and that's why I'm also here is to get input from others. Not rude comments!

learn to have thick skin. The critiques were not rude, they were honest. I do like the black and white version from mooseeyes but think the red watermark takes away from the photo what you have is a snapshot. nothing wrong with snapshots, they tend to convey emotion and mean something to the photographer. you have lovely smile and eyes and looks like you used flash because your eyes have a catchlight in them. this is a good thing. always check your background for items that compete for attention with your subject such as the door frame. or stick out behind your head or out both sides of you. i would have moved you further down the building so that the bricks were your only background. they have great texture and pattern which are good things to have compositionaly. If you are taking a self portrait may i suggest a tripod and use the self timer to get all your arm in the shot. if you have post processing software you can correct the skin tone, is appears to be too red while the chest is to white.. if you shot flash, it picked up the red tint from the bricks. either move the subject to be farther away from the bricks, or bounce your flash, reduce power to the flash or shoot with no flash. without knowing what you are using i can't be more detailed in my advice.

I always advise people just starting out to purchase these 2 books. you can get them used on Amazon.com They are both by bryan petersen. one is "UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE" the other is LEARNING TO SEE CREATIVELY. In plain english with lot of amazing photos the exposure book will teach you the basic fundamentals. The other book helps you develop your photographers eye,, and expands your creativity. I highly recommend both books and reread my copies every 6 months.

If you put your photos up for critique some people will love them some won't care some will dislike but give you advice on how to improve and finally some will be real butheads. ignore the negative remarks as some people just have miserable lives. but listen respectively to those who don't like but are willing to make suggestions. There may be some sound advice something that could be helpful. also remember this site attracts people from all over, what may be considered acceptable in New England, is considered rude in the mid west, south and Canada.

did he even have permission to download, edit and repost the image in the first place, it's against the rules on UHH.

I do love how people feel they need to be a poster's hero and "defend" them from the meanies that offer open and honest feedback. Nothing like the good old "everybody gets a trophy" mentality.
