Got it! The focus points light up now. What was the issue? The metering mode wasn't set at all!

So I'm reading about the AF system starting on page 70 of the manual and the metering mode isn't mentioned until page 169! And no Quick Start guide with the camera.

Oh the trials of a new camera!

Many thanks again for all your possible avenues to explore.

Been reading the AF chapter since Sunday and not finding any answer to this.

Chick, I think the problem is, you're just a slow reader and haven't gotten there yet!!
Chick, just kidding! If I could read, I would have known what you even needed!
Hey, just wanted to welcome you to the Hog.
And also, welcome to the wonderful world that is Canon, where the lenses a super fast, super light, super white and super expensive. You'll love it.
Again, welcome to the Hog.

If you are set for AI Servo or AI Focus and not One Shot, then you will not get the confirmation either.
I have my sights set on a 5D MK III myself.

Thanks for all your replies. Good things to check out. I'm sitting down with a friend this PM who currently uses the %Diii and that will help. Will check firmware, too.

Call tech support at Canon. They'll light you up! I've found them to be the best support on this planet.

Wouldn't manually setting your focus point take care of that? Shooting with a shallow depth of field with compose recompose isn't wise IMO.

Sounds to me like a wash, the time spent scrolling though focal points or using center point and recomposing... I'm for the latter, all be it I use Nikon, Quicker and less chance of missing the shot. That is in a hand held situation. If on the other hand I was on a tripod or camera fixed in some other way, then I would opt for a different focal point so I didn't have to re-compose.

Do not confuse "metering" with focusing, they are two different things:)

Greetings!

I'm new here and have a brand new Canon 5D Mark iii. I'm a recent convert f rom Nikon to Canon.

What is frustrating me in this first week of use is I'm not getting any visual confirmation of focus by the point lighting up in the viewfinder. I do get the confirmation of the green steady dot in the lower right. Isn't this a standard function in all pro level cameras?

What I'm thinking is this is activated by some Menu function that must be set or enabled. If so, could you point me in the best direction to find it?

If it is something else, I'd love to know! Thanks so much for your help.

Exercise extreme caution when calling Canon tech support. Every time I call they just want to talk, talk, talk. And it's always the same old f/stop this, lens that, spot metering yadda yadda,. Another word of caution, do not try to play "stump-the-dummy" with them, they ALWAYS win! The worst part? It is impossible to get off the phone with them. They just want to talk shop! Imagine! Customer support that really wants to help customers! What will they think of next?

Hikerchick,

This guy really knows his stuff, and he has written the best article I have seen yet on getting the most out of the fabulous new autofocus system on the Mk3:

Good luck!
