I want to buy a close-up lens for my Canon T3i. Looking on the B&H web site I see two Canon items: a 500mm and a 250mm. Those numbers make sense to me when talking zoom & telephoto, but I don't know how to apply them to close-up work. Can someone help?

They are 500D and 250D and not mm. I have the 500D which is said (if I remember right)to be used with lenses in the 50mm to 300mm range and it is available in larger diameters than the 250D. But despite the mentioned focal range, I used this filter on wide-angle lenses as well, also on my 400mm lens with good results. I always hated the "close-focusing" distance of my 400mm f/5.6, but with this filter I can get good shoots from about two feet away. I think it's worth every penny, it is of high quality!

I say a "nifty fifty" will please you and this Canon lens is just a little more than $100. (i.e. it is a 50mm 1.8f). It will restore your perspective in photography and excells at portraits with boca and this was the lens that made Canon famous (I think.) You will thank me for discovering the "nifty (thrifty) fifty." It fits my Canon T1i and will fit yours too. If you need any further help in purchasing this lens, do Google, etc.

Gee, he is looking for a close-up filter, not for a 50mm lens.

I have the Canon 100mm macro & love it. I have recently read more than one review that has put that Tamron 90mm ahead of this Canon. If this is true, the Tamron must be a spectacular lens. As someone here mentioned, I also have an old Mamiya 55mm f/1.8 that I reverse mount to the front off my macro. This is definately tripod stuff, at least for me. This Mamiya lens is about $35 on ebay last I checked. You can even mount it to your current lens and all the "auto" stuff works.

As Screamin Scott has mentioned, light is a huge help. I'll show you an example that would not have been possible without flash. This was the T2i, 100mm macro, hand held flash with 5x7 softbox, and a trigger.

This was taken in the middle of a bright sunny day (under a tree).
