They give protection to the lens whether in the bag or when I set the camera down. They don't get scratched and they hold their shape.

But it usually survives.

These look like a really good idea since I wouldn't have to fuss with removing reversing and replacing lens hoods when getting lenses in an out of the bag. How do they hold up in a camera bag? Do they retain their shape or do they get deformed?

On my 18x200 when not using the hood I turn it around on the lens. Just thread it on backwards. Doesn't take any room in my bag and is always handy when needed. May not work on the shorter lens.

Yes, an external Speedlight is the only way to go. The built-in on camera flash will seldom give you really great results in the best of times!!

Sometimes you don't know what you don't know.
(That was me)
Nikon flashes work great on ttl.
There will be a Nikon SB 800 coming up for sale in a couple of days.
Look for it in the classified section.

I have the same problem but with a Nikon D90 with 24-70, 2.8 and no hood. When the lens barrel is extended and I'm using flash, I get that dark spot on the bottom of my frames.
