Pizza Uno on Wabash. The view of the skyline from Navy Pier or from Northerly Island, the fishing pier at North avenue Beach.

after my daughter graduated Navy basic there we went to the Navy Pier, lots of photo ops there and some cool places to eat, and I was very surprised at how friendly people were, congrats to you and your son also, you'll be amazed at all the wonderful, polite young men and women..enjoy

Be advised the deep dish pizza takes over and hour to bake. I was very disappointed with the final result and gave my award of better pizza to NYC in a minute. I spent several months in the area of Great Lakes and would suggest any/all of the Forest Preserves for wildlife viewing. You will be close to Illinois Beach State park as well and it has a great nature trail that takes you out to the Great Lake. I wasn't impressed with photos in the city. I am NOT a big tourist type person, but if you are, then yes the Navy Pier is about as Tourist as you can get. I advise to save your travel time and explore the Northern parts near the base.

Good shots from Navy Pier and to the south of there along Lake Shore Drive is a great photo opportunity.

Lou Malnatti's on Rush, Gino's East on Walton both have excellent deep dish, Pizzeria Uno or Due's also do. Get the Sausage, Onion, GreenPepper combo (or add Mushrooms too, if you like). Northerly Island has great views, anywhere along the beaches too (Oak Street, North Avenue, Fullerton). One of my favorite perspectives is Montrose Harbor, looking across the inlet of the Lake to One Magnificent Mile. Beautiful!
Good luck, Congratulations to your Son. God Bless Him. :-D

You could try this restaurant in Lake Bluff, IL. which is close to Great Lakes that has great deep dish pizza the name of the restaurant is the Silo Restaurant.

Depending on where you are staying you could check the Lake County Forest Preserve they have numerous sites with trails to hike.

I go to Illinois State Beach Park often and take a lot of pictures there are nice trails to walk for wildlife and landscape photos.

The Silo is excellent, so is Ferentino's deep dish in Lake Forest, about 5 miles south of Great Lakes on Waukegan Rd.
You have options! ;-)

Congrats to your son. Just about anywhere on Michigan Boulevard will provide good photo opportunities. The elevated train is fun to photo. Go out to Navy Pier or to Millennium Park. Take a boat ride on the Chicago river for a different point of view. I skip the pizza and head straight for an Italian beef sandwich.

Deep dish pizzas are overrated. One piece and I feel like I swallowed a pillow. Als Beef is very good, as well as Portillos Hot Dogs, for...hot dogs. A little pricey, but very good.
Go down to Millenium Park. Lots of photo ops. Actually, the whole lakeshore is photogenic.

One good piece of deep dish is all you ever really need! Portillos is great, Al's beef is a classic, but head on down to Taylor street for great Italian (hit Tuscany for dinner after a great day shooting the lakefront and millennium park).

Take the architectural boat tour on the river. I think you get on at the Wrigley Building on Michigan Avenue. There are other architectural tours, as well. Or just walk down Michigan Avenue and/or LaSalle Street. I'm not a deep dish pizza fan...so no help there. Please thank your son for his service!

Get on the El at Armitage Brown line and it takes you through the Loop and returns to Armitage. Go to Millenium Park, it sits on a rise and you can see into the city, also good stuff there and perhaps good people shots. Lake shore drive has a Hike/Bike path. At night if you go to the Shedd Aquarium walkway, you look back at the city skyline. For urban shots try Lawrence and Sheridan. Looks rough but is safe. Go to the Green Mill while you are there. Aragon Ballroom is a neat old structure.
Try Cafe Babareba (near the Armitage El Stop) for Tapas. Tasty, good value, more local.
