Let's keep it simple. "Would you trust buying a camera from a reseller at a much cheaper price instead of an authorized dealer?"

NO!

To rephrase your question, "Would you trust an unauthorized dealer?"

NO!

Last week when I saw the ad I questioned whether this reseller, Closeout Digital in San Jose, Ca is offering a new Nikkor F2.8 EDIF 28-70mm lens for only $1259 (today it lists for $1999) is the real product or a knockoff? Anyone have similar experiences?

I would not buy it if it was a grey market. Nikon will not service grey. In the event you want to sell it, nobody may want to buy it.

You do realize that is a discontinued lens, right?
Nikon quit production of it way back in 2007.

Canon stands behind its products unlike some others do. Thats why the pros shoot the big C . IMHO. Why not buy a product that you can get service from no matter where you buy it from. I purchased a Canon len's in the UK and could get it fixed here in the states no problems at all.I keep all my receipt's and fill out the warranty cards. And when product's are out of warranty the fee for repair is a market fair price.

About 6 weeks ago I bought a grey market lens from 42nd Street Photo. Last week I dropped and now it will no longer focus (auto or manual).

So, I went to Nikon's website, put in a repair request, got a shipping packet from Nikon, shipped it to them, and yesterday got an email with an estimate to repair and if I wanted for them to proceed with the repair I need to click a link in the email to authorize the repair at the quoted price. I then rec'd a repair approval from Nikon and I'm now just waiting to get my lens back.

I wouldn't say Nikon doesn't repair grey market lenses because they are currently repairing mine.

Well that's good news to know. Nikon finely got its head out of you know where! So does that mean that some of the folks on this site don't know what they are talking about?

I have never heard of Nikon USA rejecting a paid repair to a grey market lens, only to grey market bodies. Nice to know you have confirmed the fact with a recently purchased item. No warranty repairs for sure, but paid repairs can obviously be done. Nikon Authorized Repair Centers, other than the Melville and El Segundo facilities will always repair grey market bodies and lenses for the standard repair fees. Melville and El Segundo are the only Nikon USA Warranty centers to totally trust for USA products still in the warranty period.

Melville is where my lens went, so that is good!
