Coyote Kills newborn elk calf!

Last spring while in Yellowstone Park, I witnessed an event that happens daily at that time of year, but to catch it, on camera, less than 20 yards in front of you is a once in many lifetimes event.

I would like to thank Extreme Elk Magazine for publishing my photos of a once in many lifetime happenings.
One can talk about both sides of luck all he wants, but it does play a big part, one way or the other in one's life or even ones death.

The afternoon this event happened, I was driving down a road feeling sorry for myself, as getting a decent coyote photo for me had been my Achilles heal. Then all of a sudden I see a coyote go into a small strip of trees. I drive to its end, jump out and hurry as best I could, to its far end, hoping to get a photo or two, of the coyote. But to my surprise, the coyote turned towards me and headed right at me, as I shot his photo, over and over again. At 30 yards and still coming, I thought for sure he was after me. I am not afraid of dogs and I had waited far too long for some decent coyote photos, so I just kept shooting and low and behold, at about 20 yards, the coyote killed a newborn elk calf. right there in front of me. It was a once in many lifetime happening for me, and sadly a one time happening for the calf elk.

I will post one of the photos I took, of the hundreds I shot that day, of that event. But I hope for Corey's (Editor) sake and for Extreme Elk Magazine you will consider subscribing, or at the very least, picking up a copy from a store. It's one thing to see a staged event like many video shoots do, but to actually have it unveil, right there in front of you, is very moving and most rare. So pick up a copy and see what this coyote does, right there in front of me and my camera. I think you will be amazed! And if they can kill a calf elk, about equal to their size, think what they are doing to the whitetail and mule deer newborns!

I had been ask by many to let you know in which magazine the photos would appear. I think you will be amazed at the photos I was able to capture. It was indeed a once in many lifetimes event for a wildlife photographer.

The photo I posted here was during the stalk. At this time I really thought the coyote was after me, as I had no idea a calf elk laid less than 20 yards from me, under a pine bow branch.

Have a great week. BB

May is certainly one of my very favorite times to hit Yellowstone. Your chance of seeing bears is much better, at that time, than later on, and there's far less people there before schools get out and the park gets too crowed.

Your chance of see what I say is pretty remote. I considered that a one in a many life time event to be right there, but it did happen, so one never knows.

That same day I took the coyote happening, I took these photos too.

I hope you have a great time at YS. BB

You want to see a coyote? Come to Indiana; the @#$%^ things are everywhere. Want to see one in action? Turn your cat or little dog outside.

What a beautiful coyote photo! Congratulations on your others being published. Although Yellowstone is indeed a wonderful place for photos , what you witnessed was definitely a lucky happening.

I'm also in Indiana and we do have coyotes. But we also have llamas and they keep the coyotes away.
