I saw a ballhead from Really Right Stuff this week-end and I was super impressed. Good luck.
I have RRS BH 40 Pano and BH 50 LR on Really Right Stuff legs. All are precision made in America and always perform flawlessly. I highly recommend their products. Additionally, they produce the best array of accessories for their ball heads i.e. L brackets, lens feet pano and gimbal gear, etc.
Have been shooting with a really Right Stuff for 3 yrs, great head, very solid, no problems.
I also swear by my Acratech. I have had mine for years and it is the best out of several over the years.

So two of you 'swear' by Acratech Ballhead. Thank for the tip, will research that brand further.
I do swear by my Acratech, however I will concur that the RRS ball heads are exceptional. When I bought my RRS tripod, I did so at their factory in San Luis Obispo, and had the opportunity to look at their ball heads then. I was duly impressed, but already owning the Acratech, and being totally satisfied with it, I did not feel any need to make what would be an expensive switch over.
I think anyone making the move to upgrade will not be disappointed moving to either the Acratech or Really Right Stuff ball head.
Ok, so basically (I was aware or RRS) what you need to do now is to purchase into a system more than anything else if you do not want to stick to the basics.

I have a regular ballhead and a trigger type, both from Vanguard, and they are both secure.
I am with Jerry. I have a Vanguard BH-250 Ball head and am very happy with it. But you might look into any of the Kirkland ball heads. I have a Kirkland L-plate for my Canon 70D & it is very well made.
Having an L plate on your camera body can give you a big advantage when using any ball head. The ability to simply and quickly change the camera from landscape to portrait orientation without having to adjust the ball head is a great advantage. You never have to hang the camera and lens off to the side in order to get into portrait position, which of course, means less work for the ball to do. Regardless of which ball head one goes with, I strongly suggest that an L bracket is a great addition. I will never ever again own a camera body that I don't fit with one.

I was considering this. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

I think "Kirkland" is the Costco house brand.

The fact that no plate is needed on the body makes the L bracket setup worthwhile. But the best feature of using the L bracket is that the sensor stays on top of center of gravity. The body no longer hangs out over the head of the tripod, it stays on top of it. If I get a new head the plate goes on a lens collar and stays. Changing plates can be a pain in the neck.

Yes, exactly. If you get an Arca-Swiss compatible head (and it's pretty clear you will), you then start putting "plates" on everything that gets mounted. With some lenses, the most secure option is to replace the tripod foot with an Arca-Swiss compatible foot, perhaps from RRS, Wimberley, or Kirk. The L-plate is very good for the camera, and if you're using a monopod, you don't need a head on it for most shooting, just a clamp, because the L-plate lets you go vertical. And you keep an extra plate handy just in case. At my cousin's wedding reception his brother wanted to video part of the activities with his p&s, so we mounted it on my tripod while I went hand-held.

Yes - I had to laugh. Costco has some great stuff, but ballheads are not on that list. :-)

Especially not in the Acratech or RSS class! :-D
