Good afternoon, I would like hear some opinions about the AF-S Micro Nikon 60mm 1:2.8G lens. I have a Nikon D5100 and would like to know if it would be a nice addition. Thanks John

What little things do you want to photograph?

The Nikon 85mm f/3.5G might be a little better, because you have a little more space between the lens and the subject, which gives you more space for lighting.

I think any lens addition is good depending on what you want to do with it.

I bought this lens about 3 years ago thinking I would use it for macro shots. It's a good lens, especially for close-ups and I have used it for portraits. However, I agree with Ametha, I wish I had bought a little longer lens in the 85 to 135MM range.

I don't know if it will auto-focus on the D5100 or not but suspect it will. I have used it on a D50, D80 and a D7000.

Do a little reading/searching in the macro forum - http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html

I started with a 40mm, which is fun, but as I do more macro stuff, it has lighting limitations. As of last night, I have a TC-201 and a AI-S 105mm f2.8 on the way.

There are a lot of Nikon "micro" lenses to choose from, mainly because 20-30 year old lenses are still being used today. The only thing to look for to see if a particular lens will autofocus on the D5100 is "AF-S".

Have you looked at the 105mm F2.8 micro?

I have a 60mm micro used on my D7000. This lens was good for me because I lean toward taking more "close up" shots as opposed to "MACRO" shots, so the close focus distance was not that crucial. I find this lens sharp and with a f/2.8 relatively fast. I bought this lens used and am very satisfied with it, but if you want that macro effect, the higher focal lengths (85, 100, 105, 200) would be he way to go - at a higher cost though!

I have both it and the 105mm. Which one I use depends upon the close focus distance or angle of view I want for the object I am shooting.
Close: 60mm - .6ft; 105 - 1ft
DX angle of view: 60mm - 26 degrees; 105 - 15 degrees

I had this lens for about 3 weeks. It is a nice lens and seems well built but in my opinion it is too plastic feeling. Focus was VERY fast and quiet. Image quality was superb. Since the lens has a motor it will focus on your 5100. I bought mine used in perfect condition and the only reason I sold it was I got what I paid for it and I use a Nikon D300 which has a motor in the body. The camera now drives the focus. I now use a Nikon 60mm 2.8D Micro. For all intents and purposes it is the same lens at 1/2 the price with somewhat slower focusing and studier build. The lens you are considering is a great lens and you would be very happy with it.

The 105 F2.8 micro Nikkor (manual, AI) is an excellant choice. Auto focus is little advantage doing macrophotography and this piece of glass is delivers very sharp images. It's a wonderful portrait lens as well. In "9" condition you can get one for about 450.00 from our friends at B&H
Cheers

Go for the 60mm 2.8 Micro. Fantastic and much cheaper.

Nikon has made a 60mm equivalent for the DX cameras: it's the AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm, 1:2.8G. You will be very happy with it.
