Whenever I install an sd card into a card reader, lightroom 4 automatically opens up. This only happens with my laptop and not the desktop. I don't lightroom to open up automatically, I would rather go to "my computer" and open the sd card and review my photos to pick the ones I want to go into lightroom. Is there any way to set it up to stop lightroom from automatically opening once lightroom is installed. I tried to reinstall lightroom to see if there was an option to stop this function, but lightroom automatically installs without providing a custom installation.
There is a way... I' ve done it but don't remember exactly how. It's in the "General" tab I think. Not at my computer or I could find it.

In Lightroom, select Edit then Preferences. on the General tab, un-check "Show import dialogue when memory card is detected".
Erik, Thanks for the help. Followed your directions and it worked perfectly.

What I found curious was that my LR4 started out life doing that, which irritated me, but then after I stopped using Windows Explorer to import I got used to it and started doing my importing with LR4. I then welcomed the auto-SD-card detection. One day it suddenly stopped auto opening for no obvious reason. I didn't bother to fix that and just pressed "Import" to do the same thing.
A second curiosity is that recently I upgraded to LR5 and it started out life with me in the non-auto mode instead!
I'm drifting away from LR5 into Adobe Bridge/ACR/PhotoshopCC now so I don't care to change it. Bridge acts more like Windows Explorer on hyper-steroids and I personally like it much better than the cataloging/librarian in LR5.
That turned out to work beautifully. In my case it was trying to load anything I put in my laptop that had pictures on it, and since I check the CDs I make for customers before delivering, it was driving me nuts having to shut down LR5 manually everytime.
I was using bridge til I got LR5--maybe I'll go back to it after reading the other comment. I like LR5 opening when d/l my own shots from a card though.
