I purchased this unit a few months ago. Save your money and buy something better.

The 2 swivel joints are coarse and rough. I sprayed some lubricant to get something resembling a smooth rotation. I am not satisfied with the results. The joints are looser but still rough.

The top knob has little range between locked and full movement. When in the loose position, the joint has play such that the weight of the camera/lense forces the L arm towards the J arm. In my case the L arm actually rubbed against the J arm. I had to grind away the corner of the L arm for a free swing.

The bottom joint is still rough enough that there is sometimes sufficient torque on the tripod to move it when moving the camer/lens.

I tried to take this unit apart to access the bearings but was not able to. I might be able to if I had more of a machine shop to work in.

I took both swivels apart and replaced the sticky grease. Works fine now.

Thank you.
I guess someone has to counter all the mis-information people persist in posting here! ;-)

MT, please let us know when you are stocking the gimbal. I trust that if you say it is good, than it must be.

The factory tells me that the next production run of 50 heads should be completed by April 16th, that will put it at the store about the 23rd I hope. The BUY NOW button on my website will be re-activated when the heads have cleared US Customs so I will be ready to ship as soon as they arrive and I have inspected them personally.
If they weren't good, I wouldn't be selling them at any price.

Tom,

I don't know why you have had so many problems with this gimbal. I own two of them and am quite happy with both for the money. I do agree they feel a little course without any weight on them but with 5 to 9 pounds (depending on the lens) they become smooth for me.

I did take the bottom bearing apart and cleaned and lubed it but haven't had to touch it sense.

For those brave enough to take this gimbal apart. Use a sharp instrument to remove the small compass on the top swivel. Use a good allen wrench to remove the bolt. They used permanent thread lock on the threads so there is a chance of twisting the bolt off. Mine came loose and turned out hard all the way. Clean off all the sticky grease and clean the threads out. Lubricate the parts reinstall head. Make sure the plastic tapered bushing is installed right. Use the blue thread lock on the bolt. On the bottom swivel pop off the cap. That one has a smaller bolt and probably will twist off, mine did. Then you will need a good press drill, preferably one with an attached vise to get that drilled out as close to center as possible. I tapped mine with ΒΌ threads or you can go larger. But I have a better idea, just buy a new one from MT.

I ordered from Amazon a Opteka Gimball GH1 last week loved it but could not get it to lock up. The lever that let's the camera lens go up and down does not lock while transporting. I sent it back thinking it was defective. Ordered a second one and it has the same issue! I can not tighten or loosen it! What am I doing wrong? Tried calling but can find no number! I saw some of you guys are using it. Can someone help me? In case I have totally confused you on which lever I'm talking about, it has a level on it but not where the camera plate gets mounted.....

I bought the same Gimbal last year! Mine works just fine and locks the way it should.

If I bought that unit today and the same thing happened twice I would return it ASAP! Get a full refund and buy MT's NEW CARBON FIBER GIMBAL. It costs around $290.00 and seems to be equal to or better than those costing $600.00 on average.

Ask MT to show you that sweet unit. I buying mine just as soon as they come in. I'll be using 300mm & 600mm lenses on this puppy.

Good luck with your return.
