This is my first time posting to the forum but I do quite a bit on photoshop and this was an interesting topic for me. I played around with your photo and this is what I came up with. I didn't flip the background, but I actually moved the flag over and did some other editing to the background so that it had the same light source and looks more natural.

Just because I don't see it: what is wrong with the simple flip?

So far all the selection methods are fuzzing some stuff up (like the right shoulder) that the simple flip doesn't do.

If the concern is lighting maybe a little dodging after flipping?

The problem is when you flip the background only the highlights and shadows are reversed. Makes it look unnatural.

interesting point... never thought of that. the lighting was unbrellas on both sides.. so I think it wouldn't be too bad

THIS looks great! Thanks. I work in the Federal Sector and this is my work photo.... so thank you so much! How did you get the natural look where the flag transitions to the hair, suit jacket? Dodge tool? Thanks

I created a layer mask to hide the overlap and used a soft brush around the edge so it wouldn't be such hard line. I also may have used a lighter opacity. I can't remember all the steps I did, but those are a couple of things that work for that task

I've tried without real success... could one of the Photoshop gurus help me flip the background keeping the portrait the same, but flipping the background so the flag is in back of my right shoulder? I've seen some of you background changes that were pretty amazing. THanks!

Here's my shot at it. You're the judge for better or worse.

Illindstrand, I don't like it when people go back and forth on here so don't take this in a rude manner, but it appears as though you flipped the entire photo, is that what you did?

No I did not flip the whole photo. What the original artist asked for was a background flip and that is what I did. The gentlemen is the same as in the original picture.

I used Photoshop CS5, did a reverse cut selection on it. That is I outlined the top of the head to the shoulders, selected inverse, made a new layer by copy, deselected it and then flipped the background layer horizontally. You don't need to keep it a secret. Good luck and you can ask me anytime. After I wrote this out I realized that I had flipped the whole image. I did the flip under layers and that does all layers. I have redone it and flipped under edit menu and it is now correct.

That's funny considering the original photo has the hair parted on the right and yours is on the left, the same goes for the freckle below the eye.

I apologize, when I went back and looked at it carefully I flipped the background in the wrong place which flipped the whole image. I have now corrected it.
