We probably will have 9-10 days. From some other comments it sounds like Sonoma is better than Napa.
Not necessarily. Napa, Sonoma, Anderson Valley, Alexander Valley, and Dry Creek area are all pretty wonderful, and very good for photos. As is Lake County to the northeast. The biggest problem is heavy tourist traffic (more so in Napa and Sonoma) that time of year.
If you are interested in wine country photos, and because you will be spending time in Yosemite, you might consider driving over to the Amador County and Placer County wineries. Some very lovely wineries set in the Sierra foothills. Good wines and much lighter crowds.
The thing to keep in mind is that there is a wealth of great places to see in NorCal, but distances can make trying to squeeze too much in a reality. You don't want to spend the majority of your trip driving and not taking photos. Remember, Google Maps is your friend!

So true. I am also familiar with the wine country in the Sierra foothills. Truth is, there is far too much of photographic interest in northern California for just one trip, or even one lifetime.

Door at the Dobra Zemlja Winery in the Shenandoah Valley region of Amador County.
Door to Dobra Zemlja
I did not mention the Amador CO. wineries as I know some of the photographic ops in Napa/Sonoma wineries far surpass ours here in the Jackson, Sutter Creek & Shanandoa Valley but from what I have heard the wines and hospitality is as good. I don't drink any more so I don't visit them - just drive by.
Here is one of my lucky shots - Taken from the parking spot I had grabbed as I went into Church - good thing my camera was under the seat.

Hi again to all you hogs out there. My wife and I are planning on a trip to Northern California in late May. We know we will go to Yosemite for a few days and maybe Lake Tahoe. Hopefully we will have time for Napa Valley. Any other recommendations for photo ops and places to stay.
Nothing more beautiful than driving up HiWay 1 through Point Arena to Fort Bragg. If you do that; the Wharf Master's Inn in Point Arena overlooks the ocean. There is a lighthouse at Point Arena too; great for photos.
There is so much to see, experience and photo in No. CA one can hardly fit it into a life time. I am 76 and have been traveling all over the area from age 4.
The drive South on #1 from SF to Moro Bay is best done in at least 3 days. SF it's self should be 2 days, the drive north from the GG bridge along the coast - 3 to 4 days. Back down#101 to and in the Wine Country of Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Napa area 3 days min., Yosemite, 2 days, from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe - 3 days. Lake Tahoe 2 days and as long as you are only 35-50 miles away Carson City & Virginia City 1 day .And this at about 18 days will just scratch the surface.

Just reviewed photos on web page three times ! They were fantastic all three times !!!
I have never posted on Hedgehog before, and this is not a very good photo, but this will give you a taste of the California coast about 30 minutes south of Carmel. I just love the Monterey, Carmel area. I am from the Portland, Oregon area, and my wife and I just love driving down Hwy 101 and 1.
