Pinnacles National Monument east of Soledad is great along with Pt. Lobos and Marin Headlands.

If you are in the area of Redding, Lake Shasta and dam and Lassen Volcanic Nat. Park to the west is spectacular.

I don't know if your primary focus is on photography or sight seeing, however, since you have posted here, I'll assume photography. There is the well known coastal region between Monterey and Big Sur, which includes Carmel. If you make it over there, be sure to take the 17 mile drive from Monterey to Carmel.

If you are able to make it to Napa Vally, be sure to visit Castello di Amorosa, which is off of Hwy 29 just before Calistoga. It's a remarkable European castle that has been built in Napa Valley. Of course, Napa Valley is only an hours drive from San Francisco, and so much to see in that area: Muir Woods, Sausalito, Marin Headlands etc.(Marin County north of SF, over the Golden Gate Bridge) Just remember, it can be cold in San Francisco, or anywhere on the CA coast, be sure to have jackets. I could go on, but I have no idea how much time you have. :D

This^^^ right here! This could be your travelogue. Go to Sonoma, drive over to Bodega Bay and down Hwy 1 to Carmel and then Big Sur. Take a couple extra days, you will be so glad, and very well rewarded. I love that part of the USA.
And your pics nail the essence of every scene... I commend you, because they're beautiful.

Hi again to all you hogs out there. My wife and I are planning on a trip to Northern California in late May. We know we will go to Yosemite for a few days and maybe Lake Tahoe. Hopefully we will have time for Napa Valley. Any other recommendations for photo ops and places to stay.

Covered a bunch one day with this tour...just a suggestion.
enjoy, it's beautiful

No -No -No - Napa valley has so much to offer. Make the loop up hwy 29 from Napa through St Helena there are so many great photo ops - particularly the older wineries Like Christian Bros, the Castle near Grist Mill State park, on up to Calestoga and it hot springs spas - Indian Valley spa is our favorite - Dr. Wilkins is nice too - the Old Faithful geyser is a good photo op and also a glider or Hot air balloon ride is always good- then back down the east side of the valley on the Silverado trail for more wineries and scenery. to Napa - head west again on the road to Sears Point raceway and on to the coast above SF - Muire Woods, Saucealito, Marin Headlands and the The Golden Gate. Check out some tourist maps of the area you will be amazed at how much more there is on that loop I mentioned rather than Sonoma.
Trust me on this.
There is too much empty space and hours of driving on this following quote.

Sonoma might be better wine country than Napa.

Go ahead and take your trip to Yosemite - it is so well worth it.then come back west and pickup CA hwy 49 north through the 49er Gold Rush area to Jackson and turn east on hwy 88 -( I live 15 mi up this road in Pioneer) you will have 75 mile of fantastic Sierra scenery-at the 75 mi point turn north on hwy 89 to South lake Tahoe. I could type pages of recommendations for your trip there as I lived there for 15 yrs. Do not put your camera out of reach on this road and be prepared to stop and shoot.
Like I said it is 75 mi of Photo ops. then the 110 mi trip around Lake Tahoe with it's hundreds of stops & side roads.

That fact I know a whole lot of the area this book covers I am sure I'll find many things in it that I have missed - nothing like a pro showing you around.

Yes, I second that - your photos are crisp, clear and sharp.
Do you have a website, where you post and share your photos.
Do share your website, if you do, I would like to see more
Thanks

While I have many photos of California, I also have lots from the Caribbean and the southeast US where I now live.

Oh My, I looked at your pixoto site, and your architectural background is obvious in your eye, and composition. You take beautiful pictures. Hopefully, someday, I will be able to learn some of that, as I am not a natural. Keep posting your pictures, they are a real treat to see.

Thanks Lauren. I joined this thread because of my knowledge of photo ops in northern California, which I was glad to share, but I am glad to hear about my other photos being appreciated.

Another book that would be of interest to anyone visiting northern California would be "The Photographer's Guide to the California Coast" by Douglas Steakley.

This forum definitely needs a "Like" button! Really nice pictures, I especially like the use of curves in the flow.
