I have a copy of the first generation Tokina 12-24 which I have used on my 20D, 40D and now on my 7D. Yes - there is a bit of geometric distortion at either end - but haven't seen any Chromatic Aberration to speak of. I fix the geometric distortion in post with the lens-specific digital filter. I pretty much take that lens and my Canon 18-200 as my 2-lens 'do it all' kit. IF I want a little better IQ on a planned shoot - I take my Canon 15-85.
:
I realize the info about the Canon lenses won't be of much help if you shoot Nikon - however the Tokina might be a likely choice. If you do a lot of indoors stuff - you might want a 10mm option at the lower end though - and possibly a wider f/ stop as well - the 12-24 is a constant f/4.

Hi All, I basically use on my 7D, and 50D a Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens for planned wide angle shots. The 10-22mm is sharp as a tack, but is limited by the range. That is why I use it for planned shots. I use a Tamron SP 24-70mm f2.8 VC USM lens for some planned shots in lower light, and more of a narrow field. Both of these lenses are correctable in "Lightroom". I know I should be looking for a full frame for wide angle scenery shots. I am starting to look for either a 6D or 5DIII, for both scenery, and more for portraits.

I personally us a 14-24 f/2, this is to also help other photographers get and idea on what's working from our photographers............

On my Olympus OMD EM-5, I proudly sport a great lens with an amazing 12mm (24mm equiv) wide-angle short end, The Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm F2.8-4.0 SWD, which, according to DPreview:

"...is quite simply a superb lens, which can lay claim to being one of the very best standard zooms currently available...combining a useful wide-angle for landscapes and architecture with a telephoto extending nicely into the classic 'portrait' range". (2008 review)

My no.1 lens
My no.1 lens...

I have three that are favorites: Canon's EF-S 10-22mm f3.5--4.5 zoom, Canon's EF 24-70mm f2.8L zoom & a Zeiss 24mm f1.8 Sonnar with Sony's Emount which I use on my Sony NEX-7. As a Zeiss it speaks for itself; VERY low CA & GREAT edge-to-edge sharpness even wide open.

The 10-22mm is an EXCELLENT zoom. If Canon didn't make it for their crop sensor cameras I'm sure it would be L-glass (and priced accordingly). This lens is ideal for wide-to-medium landscapes & cityscape. This rides my 7D about 90% of the time.

The 24-70mm is for my full frame.5D MKII. The f2.8 aperture is constant throughout the zoom range. I use it for moderate landscapes, street shooting & portraits at the long end. This a good walk around lens & sits on my MK II about 90% of the the time.

Which ever you choose, good luck!

I still haven't quite figured that one out. I think I almost had it once, but for some reason couldn't find the file...maybe I forgot to insert the card.

Eventually, I want to replace my kit 18-55 with something like a Tamron, Sigma or Sony 28-75 F/2.8, then get something like a 12-24. It might not be til next year because I've bought so much in the past 6-9 months I don't have the cash now...just got a flash Friday (got sent the wrong model, though! :()

Mine just showed up but other than a test shot the rain has kept me from exercising it. I hope it is as good as my 10-24 is on DX.

(Wife now gets the 10 -24)

I think we got a god selection of lenses buy some very good photographers and it gave all a chance to learn from one another what's good, what works and the upgrades others want. Thanks for everybody that answered and gave us all a good choice for what we do with our photography. Very interesting the response, thank you all and good shooting...........

Tokina 11-16 2.8. Probably the most inexpensive lens I own but it is an amazing little thing.

I purchased a Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC wide angle lens for my Canon 50D. Sharp, fast AF. Great for shooting in small areas and landscapes. Shoot close and the effects are great.

I agree. 24-70 or 24-105 is my wide angle lens. Any wider, and I do panoramas, which also minimizes distortion.
