Add an edited image to Lightroom Catalog

When I edit a photo in PS CS5 and save it, I can't seem to get Lightroom 3 to add that photo to the rest of the thumbnails. I want to keep them organized and give the edited photo a Keyword but can't find it in the folder with the other images.

First where do yopu save it to in PS I always save to the same folder as a TIFF with a separate name.
Second if you cannot find the file and you have saved it to the same folder as the original right click mon the folder in the LR catalog and then click synchronize folder

See if that works

If your work flow follows this it should show up in the catalog. Start in lr find the image you want to work on. Click on the image once to select it, then right click on it and go down the contextual menu to edit in and slide over to PS. Your image will open in ps make your changes in ps now just do a normal save. It will save the image with the same name and a tiff extension and place it back in your catalog right next to the original image.

It is easier and recommemded that you access PS from within Lightroom. That way Lightroom not only knows where the photo is, but can record exactly what edits you made.

If you did not do this, then simply import the photo you edited as a new entry in Lightroom and you will see it as a seperate "thumbnail".

Hi jeep_daddy: I don't know if this will help, here is an website forum that deal strictly with lightroom. There is an area there called starter kit that deals specifically with the is issue http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?8288-The-Starter-Kit Hope this helps some. The biggest challeng I've faced with lightroom thus far is if I only want to add one photo for processing it downd loads the whole batch. I realize that is one of the features of the program, batch processing. It seems to me there ought to be a way to move just one photo in to it all the same. That's why I go there to learn about light room and here at UHH for every thing else.

When you start the import LR will find all of the images available on the card or whatever you're importing from. You have the option to chose which images are actually imported. Simply deselect all of the images shown. Then select only the image or images that you actually want and then complete the import. LR will only import the selected images.

When you save in PS you need to select the most compatible option or as already suggested save as TIFF. Lightroom can't read the latest PS CS5 format. When I've tried importing them Lighroom reports that it can't import the PS images.

Ahhh Nightwatch... Thank you... That helps.... First time I opened it I had every photo I have taken over the last 10 years pop up... I couldn't find anything I wanted... I finally deleted each and every one of them one at a time.... Since then I did figure out how to bring in pictures by one folder at a time... This information will certainly help... Again Thanks..

Thanks for all the input and advise. I don't know how many times I right clicked on the fold and told it to syncronize but each time it didn't find the file.

In this particular case, I tried to get the RAW editor from CS5 to open from the LR3 catalog but couldn't get that to work. So, I opened CS5, Bridge, and then opened the RAW image, edited, and saved as a jpg. I went back to LR3 and tried everything to syncronize etc. Didn't work. Then I went to Preferences, General, Import Options and checked "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" and then the syncronize worked. I don't know why LR3 doesn't do this by default.

Again, thanks for the help.

PS --- Can an image be opened from LR3 directly into camera RAW?

That's what I thought but it doesn't work the same as RAW editor. I'm used to RAW editor so I wanted to keep using it. The only reason I use LR3 is I like the cataloging database that it uses. It's better than PSE9's Organizer which I've stopped using.

Actually, it's not... the processing pipeline in LR is based on the same engine as ACR. ACR is an import plugin for PS. The Camera Raw processing pipeline is in both ACR and LR, but it's wrong to think that the are the same thing. Also there are some tools available in LR that are not in ACR.
