Japan was ready to surrender before the bombs were dropped. The Russians were close to invading Japan. Japan feared the Russians more than the Americans. Dropping the A-bombs on Japanese civilians was a way to show Russia the U.S. was not afraid to use nuclear power.

Integrating the armed forces was a way to get more blacks to enlist to become canon fodder.

Larry, the Russians declared war on Japan invading Manchuria only two days after the first atomic bomb was dropped. Japan knew the Russians were in a "land grab" exercise in Manchuria and Korean and with a Japanese Army of nearly a million and a half men in Manchuria did not threaten the Japanese home islands.

You are making an assumption that Japan feared Russia more than the United States. There is no claim by Japanese historians that Japan feared Russia more than the Americans. With American forces gathering for an invasion Japan was much more concerned with where the American's were going to land.

You make an irrational claim that Truman's integration of the armed forced in 1948 was a way to get more blacks to enlist. Voluntarily enlistments were not needed as the draft provided all the manpower required for all services.

Damn! What are you trying to do, confuse larrypayne with the facts? One correction: Russia was a part of the Soviet Union (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR). Maybe the dominant force in the USSR, and the two terms are often used interchangeably.

Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many, or more important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 32 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence , Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952 his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me.. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me.. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, too many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale (ie. Illinois ).

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!

We ought to have cloned him for telling it like it is and being frugal with our tax dollars!
Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He... (show quote)

And he left office with a 23% approval rating and most people considered him a failure only Bush had a lower rating at 22%. Truman was truly a very good president and an honest man.The $25,000 pension was supposed to cover his travel and he probably never said the piano quote but it does sound like him.
In 1942 when he was the "corrupt" senator from Kansas City he drove his brand new car himself to Georgia at his own expense to investigate corruption going on in the building of new army bases
and helped put an end to the said corruption.

Truman was also a member of the KKK and paid dues after he was elected President.

larrypayne, Truman did NOT ruin the USA's reputation for dropping the A-bombs, that is a retarded statement. It prevented many more deaths than happened because of them. War is hell. In addition, you have Israel of the brain. You heart, and head is filled with hate.

It is not clear if Truman was is the KKK and if he was it was early in his career. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_it_ignored_that_President_Harry_S_Truman_was_a_member_of_the_Ku_Klux_Klan
Ask any Pacific Veteran if truman was wrong in dropping the A-bomb.

Truman was one of only two Democrats that I would ever vote for - but I was too young to vote for him.

Another, if not the most heroic act he took was to fire McArthur. McArthur did an excellent job getting Japan back on its feet, a good job with the Korean war. But, it seemed he came to think of himself as having taken the place of the Japanese emperor and so should be worshiped as such.

=========================================================You're so right... It was a '53 Chrysles New Yorker... I remember seeing a picture standing by the car on their way back to Independence...

For anyone interested in more, read "Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure", by Matthew Alego. The story of Harry and Bess Truman driving from Missouri to Washington, D.C., in his new Chrysler New Yorker, with no secret service protection. His 1953 Chrysler had all the latest technological innovations, including a PowerFlite automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. Truman said, "It's got so many gadgets on it I'll have to go to engineering school to handle it". When Truman left the Presidency his pension amounted to $111.96 per month, after taxes, and that was from his service in WW1, no credit for his years as commander in Chief. When he took office, his salary was $75,000 a year, but he was expected to pay all White House expenses. Great story and great read, how times have changed.

you seem to be any angry person....most of the replies to this post were positive toward Truman....he had some tough decisions to make, and he made 'em....and he retired gracefully....
gee, if he didn't drop the bombs we would have los... (show quote)

Some estimates say that several million lives were saved, both on our side and their side, by dropping those bombs. There was a plan in place that would have resulted in wholesale slaughter of our troops and Japanese had we invaded the islands.

Truman was a failed haberdasher installed as president to take orders from the military/industrial complex.

He ruined the U.S.'s reputation forever by agreeing to drop 2 atomic bombs which incinerated hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians.

He also created a situation in the Middle East which causes perpetual war by agreeing to the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

The military/industrial complex got their money's worth out of Truman.

Damn Larry... would you go back to the Is aid to Israel Legal... You were doing much better there..
