Thank you so much for all your help. They are all good except for the duct tape, may pass on that one, mom may not ask me back. These kids really are very well behaved just move very fast. All gave me hugs when we finished. I am buying a tripod for shooting my volunteer luncheon, this will be pics of about 40 volunteers all over 65,lets see how that goes. At least they and me won't be moving as fast. lol!
After 3 tries with these two families, I have at least 300 fantastic pictures, those were horrible, but wanted to show what 3 out of 6 shots continuous looked like, dumped them all. I will be trying all your ideas to see what works best for the future. Thanks again!!

Dad's not home during the day? Be sure to print some wallet size prints.

So very frustrated! I am on my 3 rd try, trying to take pictures of 4 boys ages 3 1/2 to 11 yrs old. I am not trying to making money doing this, just doing a favor for a friend. I can take amazing shots of two kids at a time, but when ever I try and get all 4 in a picture, forget about it. It's not about exposure, but trying to get one shot with everyone looking ok. I do either aperture or shutter priority and continuous shots. I had 5 different sets with at least 15 to 20 shots, and dog gone it, in every picture someone is moving or looking down or has a really silly face. In one set I had the boys sit on a banister, and in a matter of less than 10 seconds, we almost got everyone up than we had a man overboard. Than we try and put mom into the mix and not one good shot.
We are trying to get one great picture for dad for fathers day.
I try to pose and to have them play does not matter.
SO HELP!! Yes I'm shouting cause I really could use any suggestions.
They are the cutest boys ever and the sweetest just very active.
So very frustrated! I am on my 3 rd try, trying to... (show quote)

Food bribery. You might also have someone else get their attention while you do the camera work

Maybe don't try to get them sitting still. I saw some instructional videos by a photographer in Australia (near Brisbane?) who did kids portraits by having them all walk or run toward him. Maybe the key isn't to get them to do nothing, but to get them to do the same something that you choose. If you and the mom pick something which is characteristic of them, it will be an even better picture for dad.

Jumping almost always works. Good suggestion, Amehta.

The irresistible force vs the immovable object is easy compared with your problem! Tie'em up, put their feet in cement, put 'em in a box or cage, and you might have a chance of getting a picture. May the force be with you.

Photoshop or similar. Combine the best shot of each kid into one image using layers.

Mom you will love this solution:
First take several photos of each pose. Taking group shots of any age and someone will always move their head, shut their eyes or with little kids, make a face.
Then get Adobe Elements 11, a very inexpensive program with a feature called "Photomerge"
With Photomerge, the program will move a good face from one photo to another and you will never see that it has been moved.
The other solution is teaching four boys to behave but Photomerge is easier

I have only two grandchildren and taking one photo in which they both look good is a battle. These are ideas that have helped me:

1. Pose them where they are comfortable.
2. Use a tripod and take all the photos (or at least a big series of photos) from that one position. This will make it easier to post-process if you need to exchange the head from one picture to another since they will be the same size.
3. Set your camera to shoot 3 photos with each shutter activation (no need to bracket exposures, just shoot in bursts of 3).
4. Good old fashioned bribery. I can't bribe the baby, but my 5 year old grandson is definitely willing. I have his piggy bank next to me and, each time he doesn't make a silly face or paste on an artificial smile, I drop a quarter into the piggy bank. This way, I focus on the baby and press when she looks good.

I have three grandsons, the easiest way is one at a time.

Kids have the attention span of a water spider.

Not if it's something they want to do. Put them in front of a video game, or put them out on a playground, and they can play the same game for an hour. And the "readers" can sit all afternoon. But if it's something they don't want to do, forget it!

Have you tried tranquilizers? For them, not you.

You submitted three pictures. The first was the best as I recall and the others were OK. These are kids, boys at that, don't expect little angels

Just a heads up on a tripod purchase. The subject of "what's a good tripod" appears almost daily on the forum. If you are new to tripods, might be worth a search here to read what experts say. In other words, you will be terribly disappointed with a $39.95 tripod, or even a $100.00 one. If you have already done the tripod research, please disregard my post.

Good Luck!

Billbobboy,
I know about the tripod posts have been reading them, and plan on about $200. still undecided as to which one yet, and don't want to go to that topic now cause that will take us days.

Am I the only one who likes pictures of kids showing a little personality? The father is going to like the pictures, because this is their family. Expecting a perfect picture with everyone lined up liked robots may not be the right format. Is there an activity they could do together, then show off what they accomplished? A more natural format for kids.
