Need Help

I an a first time participant on this site and I am not too computer smart. I have a canon XS260HS and have a problem. In the past I was able to take a picture and then crop it to a portion of the main picture. I have been following the steps on page 174 of the manual, but I have not been able to crop a picture again. What am I doing wrong? I follow the steps given, but the screen doesn't look like the book. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scocia

If it were me I would contact Canon, probably by phone, It may be that you need to re-programme your Camera.

Welcome to UHH. Are you talking about cropping it within the camera or on the computer?

Yes, I'm talking about doing it in the camera and then being able to save the new image.

Forgive me if this seems a dumb question, but how full is your memory card? Do you have enough room to save another image?

2 side questions: a) When was the last time you formatted your memory card? b) Many cameras have a "Lock" function that you can set per each image in the camera so that you cannot accidentally erase the image. Do you have this set for the picture you are trying to crop? It may not let you do any kind of editing if so.

Thanks for the info Picdude, When I first had this problem, I thought it might be a memory card problem, so I down loaded everything on to my computer and then I recharged the battery, thinking that might be the problem.

I don't know what you mean about formatting the memory card. I'm a novice. As far as the lock function, I'll try and research that. I have down loaded the manual onto my computer and then print out different pages that I'm interested in. So I'll try and find something about a lock function. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks Picdude!
I went to the manual on my computer and printed out the page that deals with locking and unlocking. Unlocked the picture and was able to crop it. Again, many thanks.

Great, glad your back in business with the cropping, and glad to have helped.

As far a formatting your memory card: formatting wipes all data from the memory card and optimizes it for use by the device that formatted the card (in this case, your camera). When you delete an image from a memory card, you're not really erasing data from it, you are simply telling the camera it is ok to write data overtop of the deleted image.
Your manual should give very specific instructions on how to format your memory card. It's usually very easy and highly recommended, especially when you first install the card in the camera. I personally only reformat on first installation then very infrequently after that, and have never had an issue with any of the 4 digital cameras I have owned. I've also probably just been very lucky. Other members here swear by reformatting every time they download the images from their card, and have described issues of corrupted images or inability to write to the card that were fixed by reformatting, so that's definitely an easy preventative maintenance issue to keep in mind.
