Thank you. What you said makes perfect sense.

If Flash/strobes are involved (which is true for 90% of what i do - inside AND out) i will be in Manual so I can control the flash/ambient balance. For natural light stuff I use Aperture Priority since controlling DOF is important for portrait work.

[quote=Rongnongno]Manual, including auto focus that I learned to distrust a long time ago.

Once you learn light and light conditions you stop thinking and just do it. I learned with a view camera and an old 6x6 roleiflex and never left that 'thinking' mode.[/qu

Rongnomgno will all know you stopped thinking. - dave

My goal when I started out in July was to be able to shoot in Manual Mode in order to have complete control over my D7100. Now that I understand, somewhat, I am finding myself switching to Aperture very often and even Shutter Speed once in a while but, never in Auto. There are many great photographers within UHH and I find myself wondering how each of you shoot or your mindset regarding Modes. I do use AFC mostly and back button focusing. It bothers me that, while I understand the triangle, I cannot seem to master only shooting in Manual. Please share your thoughts.

I use every mode except auto. It depends upon the situation.

I find myself using Aperture mode most of the time. I switch to shutter priority when I shoot fountains or streams.

Hi David. I am going to be the odd man out here.:) I was a pro for 20 years back in the film days and every thing was manual. I went digital about 5 years ago. It is a hobby for me now about 80% of the time. I do weddings with a friend as second shooter and a few other things to make money.:)

But I shoot 75% of my pictures in P mode. It is a relaxing thing for me to be out in nature. If I can't get the shot I want. Yes I go manual.:) It is just what you decide to do and how you want your shots to look. For me it is relaxing. But I can always setup and get the shot. So yes learn to go manual, but it is you learning to use your camera. Don't make it work!!!

Thanks for responding. I'll have to try Program mode. I've never used it and I suppose I should have during the process. I haven't heard anyone say anything about the Scene Modes. I find that interesting and I have to admit that I haven't used them either. I've been so focused on Manual and getting a good focus that I have overlooked a lot of things. I mostly shoot outdoors so I was thrilled when someone on UHH pointed out that I needed to be in AFC and try the back button focus. That was a giant leap for me.

Actually, I did mention [GASP] scene modes, which I have found sometimes work quite nicely..........

David, do you have any of the books written for your camera? There are a lot of them out there. They help you set up your menus and are really better than the Nikon manual. I have 3 for the D300s. And it has made getting the camera set up right very easy. The one I like best is by Darrely Young. He does most of the Nikon cameras. He writes well and you can understand what he is saying. Not sure if he has done yours tho. But I would get a few and read them.:)

Erv knows enough of what he is doing to know what P is doing for him. I would suggest A and S for you, David, so you are more conscious about the exposure triangle values and what they are doing for you.

Mostly Aperture mode because DOF is important for focus and composition, but I keep an eye on the resulting shutter speed at the same time. Shutter mode, I use for situations where stopping action is important (like a rodeo) but keep an eye on resulting aperture. I both modes I make use of exposure compensation if I think the average exposure needs adjustment. I like to think of this as "assisted manual".

I've also experimented with manual mode where I set the shutter based on the 1/(focal length) rule and the shutter on what sort of DOF I want and the using Auto-ISO. It seems to work as long at the light is good. I feels kind of weird since I started in the film days and ISO was never "auto".

Finally, I bought a Nikon V1 a couple of weeks ago to use as a pocket camera. P(rogram) appears to be a practical option since with the really small focal lengths DOF is pretty much academic anyway. On an SLR (D or F) I feel Program isn't much more than Auto with bells and whistles
so this is still an experiment.
