When my wife & I were driving around the north side, we could look out the left window and see sea level. Look out the right and up, snow...
Seemed odd for being in Paradise!

We did a lot of stuff there. I remember, we were seeking out the southern most point of the Big Island. We traveled down a road to a southern point past one large wind generator. Wasn't much there. Took a picture and claimed it the "Southern Most Point of the 50 United States!!...."

A claim, that to this date has not been disputed. We hadn't told anybody about it, either....

Southpoint is known locally as the place where boats and trash from all over the world end up. My brother fishes and dives there for lobster, in and out of caves catching them by hand, sometimes without air tanks. Not me lol. He has found those glass balls (100s) used by fishermen as floaters, some from the 1940's, still floating around in the sea. I have yet to find one.

Hawai'ian butterflies are very easy to photograph because they don't frighten as easily as the Monarchs. I've taken many pics of thiese butterflies, some on bamboo, or poinsiettas like this one, and other flowers. It's a lot of fun filming these beautiful creatures.

My son and I have been wanting to go to Trash Beach and do some treasure hunting. Those balls are the ones I want. I can't imagine what it will look like when Japan's tsunami trash comes in (I don't want to treasure hunt in that). It is estimated to arrive in 2013. I'll take pictures, though.

It's fun going to Southpoint unless you don't like the remoteness and bareness. One has to be really patient to find those glass floaters while sifting through mountains of trash. We saw a boat once that had washed up from Japan. You never know what you'll see or find. On one of my earlier trips there after moving back to Hawai'i I found a nice driftwood tree which rode home on the roof of my car. This became my christmas tree, decorated with shells and Hawai'ian memorabilia and such. Very cool.
