Yes, it is the lack of habitat for the butterflies. Man's encroachment have removed much of the breeding, egg laying, and caterpiller food, namely the milkweed varieties. Many articles have been written about this recently and people are urged to plant for this endangered species now. Last year I only saw two or three Monarchs at our arboretum along with tigertails and other butterflies normally much more plentiful.
