Just read on Facebook that Calumet was closing all it's US stores and the website is down. Is this for real or is it just a hoax?

Another one bites the dust.... We had one about 20 minutes from here.... I will miss it for sure..... Pretty much always got gift cards from relatives for birthdays and Christmas... Fortunately had spent all of them a while back. They will be missed! :-(

Two weeks ago I received $1k in Calumet gift cards as a farewell present from colleagues. Hopefully the Boston (Cambridge) location will reopen...
If your colleagues purchased via credit card, I suggest that they instruct CC company to cancel purchase, based on non-performance.

Where did you hear or read this news? Here in Chicago we did not hear anything of the sort. We heard that Calumet notified its employees the night before not to show for work. I would like to know where you read or saw this.
From a (now former) employee at the Hollywood CA store. He found the parking lot gate chained closed, early in the morning, which means the lock was applied the previous night. He had no previous warning. Calumet is based in Chicago, so I am not surprised that local stores learned about this the night before.

An excellent suggestion, no sense losing that money!

I will miss Oakbrook but am rather PO'd that I received an e-ad from them just this last Wednesday, the 12th. Glad I didn't buy any of their "specials" "sale items" or used their advertised "financing".

I will admit to doing that sometimes in the past. I w.very pleased tho when I traded in my 60D and lenses for a 6D and lens, to learn that my local dealer's prices were identical to B&H and they offered the same trade in value that KEH offered. That was not always the case, but I always prefer to purchase locally when the price difference is not significant.

I was looking for a camera bag, and went to my local store in Baltimore. In a matter of minutes, I found the kind of bag I wanted, but was uncertain about on the Web. As I spoke to the salesman, he offered to show the 70-300mm zoom I was thinking of buying. He put it on a new D7100, which was also on my wish list. As we spoke, he was extremely good at instructing me about the differences between the D7100 and my old D300. Did he "upsell" me? I bought nothing I did not already want, and I got about two hours of great counsel. And I spent very little more than I would have on the Web...when I bought all three items!

Calumet has created a whole new definition of "chain store". The one in SF is chained and the employees were tossed out on the street. I bought a considerable amount of stuff there and took numerous classes. Too bad!

I love this. It just totally underscores why I'm sullen about the news regarding Calumet, and possibly other stores like it. We all have GAS*, and stores such as Calumet allow relief! As they go out of business our hobby becomes less fun because we won't have our local "guy(s)" to help and counsel us through our GAS*. :-D

Yeah... :(

If you knew how far I have to drive to get to a good local shop you'd laugh.

I know I want to cry... my truck only gets 23 miles to the gallon.

Let's face the fact that we the "I want to see it, touch it, waste your time asking you questions about it, but buy it for a lower price online" customer is to blame for the ongoing disappearance of brick and mortar stores. We have ourselves to blame.

Some of us do, some of us don't. We know which camp we respectively belong in. ;) or

You're right. I belong in the I buy locally camp. I appreciate the added service and knowledge shared by a local B&M. Sadly though, in Tampa, Best Buy is about the only option left. If they leave the marketplace, there simply won't be anywhere else to hold a product in my hands and see if it's what feels right for my needs.
