Anyone out there using a teleconverter with a tamron 18 - 270? I haven't used a teleconverter and would be interested in the quality of the pictures.

Fuhgeddaboudit.
The lens is too slow (3.5-6.3) and it has too wide a zoom range to give you good results.
That lens is already a compromise as it is. It's not a bad lens, but a jack of all trades is a master of none.

The best lenses are primes, or if it's a zoom lens, no slower than f/4 and no more than a 3x zoom range.
You lose a stop or two depending on which TC you are using.

Agree. Probably the only zoom I would use a TC with would be a 70-200 2.8-- and then only the 1.4x

my teleconverter works well with the primes and 24-70 zoom; does not play well with 55-200, 70-300 or 28-300

I have used teleconverters but I won't again. They cause too many problems and they are too much of an unsatisfactory compromise. I am going to unload mine and never look back. They don't work on all lenses and the picture quality isn't as good as I want. I am really against them as they just don't work well in my experience.

Olcoach, the key, in my experience, is to use matched tc's.
I have a 1.5x for the Sigma 50-150 DX and Nikon's 1.4 for the 70-200.
For what I shoot, I can't see any image quality difference at all. These are not cheap lenses though.

I use the Tamron 1.4 TC with my Tamron SP 70-300mm lens and it works quite good with auto focus and everything. I haven't used it a lot but when I have it performed well....Rich

I have the Tamron 18-270 2.8 and the kenko 1.4 pro converter on a D5000. The pics are very sharp. You wind up with f4.0 but that's ok since I normally use a tripod anyway. The only negative is having to focus manually and loss of VC.

"the key, in my experience, is to use matched tc's."

i think goofynewfie has the handle on it. My $29 teleconverter does not work with the long zooms because it was designed for the short lenses of yester-year.
The people who are getting good results with the long lenses seem to be using 200-500 dollar converters designed for their specific lenses.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have the 2X Canon converter for my Canon70-200mm F/2.8 lens and it is only ok. When on the Canon 100-400mm lens it is lousy...
