Swans and Geese

My goal was to shoot these in manual with some settings Greg recommended. The swans appeared while I was still in aperture priority, and I shot away before they disappeared. The geese were caught with manual settings with an attempt to get the shutter speed right and control the light. There isn't an option for having the sun behind me at this time of day.

Please feel free to offer ideas for improvement.

I love the challenge of shooting in manual, but once you've done it enough it's really the only way to shoot for complete control. I do find myself shooting some BIF and such in aperture priority still though, especially when I just don't have the time to make adjustments and am missing shots.

Looks like you did pretty good to me! I really like the last shot. Thanks for sharing them.

They look pretty good to me also. I am still practicing in AV mode with Auto Focus. I hope to get to manual mode eventually. As for manual focus, I find that pretty tough to do. :)

Great series and you captured some fantastic moments. You hae done so well in handling the manual setting. I am just learning manual, love it but not as quick as some othr settings. Your hots are nicely done

The aperture priority pictures are well done. Even #3, which is backlit came out as good as can be.

The manual settings, too, are well done. They are all backlit, so you did well to figure it all out.

Vic, you get better and better with each passing day!

I used manual settings with auto focus. My focusing skills are not that good although there have been times manual focus was all that worked.

Thanks for checking these out and commenting. I appreciate it.

Thanks so much Photobud. I really appreciate the time you've taken to look and comment. The manual settings aren't that difficult, or not as bad as I used to think. Gregory told me they give you more control over shutter speed, and I'm finding that's very true.

It's difficult to get anything around here that isn't backlit in the morning. I always seem to be stuck on the north or northwest side of water features. I like the effect of the lighting when it works, but there are a lot of discards, too.

Thanks so much for the vote of confidence. Positive feedback keeps me going and makes me want to improve.

Doin' good on the manual settings. I like the two geese swimming. The UPS man is delivering my new D7100 today. It will be my first DSLR, other than a small point/shoot. All I know is manual after years of 35mm SLRs, so this will be a big learning curve for me, I'm afraid. Keep up the manual work and study your exif data on your non-manual photos. It won't take long and you'll be all over it. :D

Thanks so much. I like your suggestion.

You're going to love your new toy.
