On my last trip I lost the lens hood for my Nikon AFS DX 10-24. I can't find it on the Nikon, Adorama, and Amazon websites. Our only Nikon store here in town tells me it will take some time because they're not easy to get. Why are they so hard to find, and is there a 3rd party vendor that can supply an adequate replacement?
B&H has a Vello HB-23 in stock for $10 (

Maybe a reason to get a Canon. :-D
It may have been hard to find because it does not list the Nikon 10-24mm lens as one of the ones it works with.

Sure Dave there is a local vendor and solution for you in Hawaii, or wherever you may be. Go to the supermarket, buy a cylinder style box of oatmeal, eat and enjoy the oatmeal and save the box. You will also need a couple of feet of duct tape. Cut off an appropriate length of the oatmeal box to use as a hood (you may find you need to create an adaptor funnel out of another section of the cylinder, or simply cut down the cardboard ring you now have) and tape it carefully to your lens, This will give you a fairly close approximation of the hood you are missing till you can get a new one delivered.

There are web sites that have instructions to print paper hoods that you cut out and use, and keep using if you need to. They are not difficult to do, and they are completely FREE

Just watch for glare when out in the sun and shade your lens with your hand. You can still steady your camera with your thumb while doing this. Or have someone shade the lens with their hat. - Dave
