The OP wants to also use a teleconverter, which the Tamron will not do.

I do wonder who has compared the Tamron 150-600mm with either Canon lens? The DxOMark ratings show a pretty significant difference (24 vs 17), which may only noticed with a big print. But if Willy has the means, and he has obviously kept his financial house in order, and wants to get the best lens, I think the Canon wins.

The Tamron 150-600mm does a great job of what I seen are mostly stationary objects and it is a zoom. There's a gentleman from England that has done some BIF with that lens on the forum and they look good. I'm not sure of how well the AF works as it's been reported that people were experiencing problems with the AF and also focus out past 300mm. If you were Tamron and everyone with a Nikon wanted one and we are talking about making money now tell me why they're not selling it with a Nikon mount. I don't buy the story that Canon has a lock on it either. When Tamron can mass produce that lens in mounts other than Canon we'll have more input from all makes to evaluate it . Back to the main point, is it a Canon 200-400mm f/4 with a built in 1.4 TC or a Canon 500 or 600mmf/4.0, we got off track somewhere.

The main topic is about the Canon 200-400mm f/4 with the built in 1.4x TC versus the Canon 500mm f/4.

I still say the Canon 500mm. :-)

Tamron is making one with a Nikon mount which, according to Tamron, should be out at the end of this month.

I would recommend renting each one. If you qualify for the Canon CPS program, you can borrow each one free and evaluate them yourself.

Which would you choose???
I'm leaning towards the 200-400.
I like the versatility of the zoom. Unless I'm mistaken the 200-400 has a greater reach.
When using the internal 1.4x converter plus an external 2x converter you'd have a 1120mm lens as opposed to a 1000mm
with the 500 and a 2x converter.
I believe the addition of the 2x on the 200-400 reduces this to a manual focus only lens.
I like the price of the 500mm better and when coupled with a 2x converter the auto focus still works.

I'm curious how other hoggers would choose.

Now I need to get my resume in order and go get a second job to finance one or the other....

Probably right after Canon comes out with their 7DMKII, just kidding. It's not in the same league as the Nikon or Canon 200-400 or the two other mentioned Canon lenses due to the aperture. I'm hoping for a broader analysis from more diverse users. How the AF works on moving subjects is of prime importance.

I can see how it works for on guy (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-174670-1.html). I'd love to see samples from the two expensive lenses. Not that I have that kind of money. :-D

Another option would be to buy it and then sell it at the end of the Trip unless you would end up taking a bath on that.
remember to buy insurance

Anna, a very warm welcome to the Hog. My personal feeling is that you rent lenses when you're doing a paid shoot, then build it into the cost of the shoot.
Granted, these lenses are expensive to buy, but also expensive to rent.
The OP has said he is not interested in renting, but you didn't know that yet.
Again, welcome. ;-)

That combo does auto focus with the 5D III as well!

I was going for the nikon 200-400 version without the 1.4 but then I figured since I already have a 70-200 2.8 and I never have enough pull factor, anyway I went for the 500 f4 and with my D800E, use it in crop mode and still get 20mb files. I can always throw a 1.4 on it as well. I dont like 2x as 2 stops is too much to loose with sharpness as well. If you decide to go for the 500 why not go second hand and save a bundle.

Willy, there comes a time I every man's life, when he just has to get his priorities straight!!
Congrats on the new and probably the most awesome lens made today. I don't think you will ever regret it. Remember, that in five years, it may be worth more than you paid for it!! And if you drop down to the middle of CA., I expect to hear from you.
Show us some pics!! ;-)
