The bird was flying over a small lake, looking for fish. The flight path brought the hawk directly over me. It happened fairly quickly and I didn't have time to zoom out. Taken with Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 70~200 with a 2X telextender reading 350mm. At first I was disappointed that the whole bird was not in the frame (picture 1) but as I looked I decided to radically crop and I think it worked (picture 2).

Looks more like an osprey than a hawk.
OK. I could easily be wrong; I haven't bought my bird ID book yet.
There are great id sites on the web. Depending on where you live you may also have a Audubon chapter and they lead tours as well as having classes. I am reasonably knowledgeable about bird id but I have learned a lot just from a couple of outings and one meeting.
The group outings have some very knowledgeable people, as well as neophytes. Most carry binoculars, but some of us carry cameras. Enjoy the birding.
Yes, it's an osprey :) Nice images!

Nice as they are. I would have liked to download them to get a better view though.

OK. Here is the original shot.
Kinda debuncts the theory that the 70-200 2.8 is not "good" with a 2X !

I actually put the 70~200 up for sale on Craigs List. When I saw the results with the 2X telextender, I removed it from the list. BTW, the telextender is also Nikkor equipment.

I like the crop. Have you tried to adjust for more detail in the white area?
It is a good shot.
