Amehta, thanks for the suggestion. I guess the 50 on FF 610 may require me to get really up close an personal with my subject for a portrait. Reviews look good on that 85.

I don't know if it's true but it's been stated many times on other forums that Tamron is the only third party lens maker that pays Canon for the rights to Canons engineering on their lenses so they don't have to reverse engineer the lens for Canon mount.

It also could be that the 150-600mm isn't working properly on some, not all of the Canon cameras. The 7D and 1D IV AI Servo tracking isn't holding focus while tracking BIF on these two cameras. Tamron and several photographers are going back and forth about this and many have returned the lens because of it. So far Tamron hasn't admitted to the problem yet.

That ship has sailed. Tamron already has the A-F logarithms from Nikon, Pentax, & Sony.

"Logarithms", base "e" or "10" ?

Before I sold my Leica gear to pay for my daughter's birth I used my Leica 125mm lens at open apertures for portraits. The 50mm lens, or shorter is not a portrait lens. I now use Nikon (still can't afford Leica) and am quite pleased with it's quality.

There is a rumor going around that another manufacturer is going to release a 50 to 800mm, f2.8. No price has been announced, but those of you that have to have these wide ratio zooms should wait before purchasing anything else.

50-800 and 2.8? I think I'd have to sell a car or two to afford that one.

My mouth is watering but my car isn't worth near enough to sell for it for it.

I bought one (the only one so far) from SCHILLER'S Camera in Saint Louis, Missouri. I am very pleased with the results.

Have a look at the first photo... Enlargement will show the weave of the canvas of the print sample on the wall.

BTW= Schiller's Will Take Orders over the Phone.

Yes, and when you get close, the face gets distorted. I use the 85mm f/1.4 all the time and it works great. The 85mm f/1.8 is almost identical, so I have no hesitation recommending it also.

I had an emergency before I finished my last post above.

Like I said I'm lovin' the 150-600 mm lens but I don't do very many BIF. I shake to much to keep a BIF in the viewfinder. Every once in a while I get lucky but it's unusal.
You can follow the discussion on fredmirandas site for more information.
Here's a few from my lens & 7D.

I will... I am looking for a really good portrait lens, nothing professional just something to shoot portraits of family

85 mm is fine, but a 105 or 135 is better IMHO. I like the flattening effect of the longer focal lengths, as well as the ability to blur the background better.

Since I have the Canon 7D I'm holding off on perching this lens until is see more photos taking with this lens. Looking at the photos you posted they look a little on the noise side and the focus seems to be a little off. Is this what you found with this lens and camera combo....Rich
