I have a Canon 5D Mark 111 and have all Canon lens. I have a 17-40 wide angle lens and just purchased the 70-200mm. I also have the 50mm fixed lens and the 100mm macro lens. I was thinking about getting the 24-105mm lens. I shoot mainly landscapes and 'objects' (such as tail lights, old hinges etc) Would I be duplicating something I already have? I use the wide angle most of the time but there are some instances the wide angle just isn't right so that is why I was thinking of getting the 24-105. I have read all the reviews so don't point me in that direction.

I have the Canon 5D mk 3 too and one of the lenses I use the most is the 24-105. Although not as wide as the 17-40 it is auguably more versatile and I wouldn't be without it.

The 24-70 L, which can be had in either f/4 or f/2.8 versions also has received high marks. I have the f/4 version and love it. Great for walk around and landscapes.

I must be missing something! I have re-read the OP's post and don't see any mention of a 24-70.

That is because the OP didn't mention it.

So, perhaps he's not even considering a 24-70!

You're right. He didn't mention it, which is why I did. He stated that he was considering the 24-105 so I gave him something else to consider if he wishes to. It's a very good lens and who knows if he is even aware of it. I don't. Do you?

Art, I have the same lenses you have, including the 24-105.
Would you be duplicating?? Art, you would be eliminating 3 of your lenses!!. Hey, I'm mostly serious. The 24-105 is probably the most used lens on a full frame, since it covers the entire mid-range that you are using the other three lenses for.
I would not hesitate to get the 24-105, it will very quickly become your fav lens. I still use the other three, they all have their specialties, especially the 50 for indoors. Of course the 24-105 is only an f4, so it doesn't go indoors very well, but it excels at the outdoors as the ultimate walk-around lens. Art, hope this helps you, and good luck. ;-)

I have a 16-35mm f/2.8 L, a 24-105mm f/4 L & a 70-200mm f/2.8 L.
The 24-105 is my favorite and most used.

I'm not sure that you would miss the gap from 40 to 70mm, so I think your two lenses cover your needs, even before the primes are considered. When you are shooting 'objects' like these, it's easy to "zoom with your feet" to take care of the little gap. Given what you have, I would suggest a lens like the 24-105mm if you did event photography, but not for the use you describe.

For several years, I had the Nikon 17-35mm and 70-200mm, and the only time I needed the middle lens was shooting a roommate's wedding. I got the 24-70mm which was only used for events like fundraisers.

Likewise, I use the 5D3 as my main camera body and have a series of lenses for specific uses. Thus, my photographic mindset requires a versatile "go-to" lens and the 24-105 fills the need. For instance, when I am in macro mode with the 100mm macro lens at some location, pond-arboretum-trail, a wider view of the surrounds captured by the 24-105 can be important. Same is true when I am capturing a sporting event(70-200mm) and a team photo taken with a wide angle is also needed, or I have my 400mm f5.6 on a bird outing, the 24-105 is always along for "people" shots or landscape where I find particular species.

If your mindset is similar and your imagination may inspire a different "look", the 24-105 is an excellent second lens to carry. Truly, worth the money.

You might also consider the SIGMA 24-105 F 4.

It is cheaper and sharper than the Canon.

( It stays on my camera 90% of the time)

Having the same camera body I asked myself the same question. I think it's important to consider the available light you will be working with. I went with the 24-105 f4 and it has become my walk around all purpose lens. I also use a 70-200 when I need more reach and 2.8 when light becomes an issue. I also wondered if the 24-70 2.8 might be better for me and one day maybe I will pick one up, but for now I have other lenses to work for me with low light indoor situations. You wont be sorry with the 24-105.
