i have heard a lot of talk in the past about the new digital killing pro photography. BUT I THINK you have been describing why that will not happen. The average amature missuses features to the point that a pro should feel safe.

I like HDR when done right. I like to see different kinds of images made not is great but I do like HDR it is different!

I want to share my two cents worth. Looking into Wilipedia will get you a very brief description of Orton. It does have quite a dissertation of HDR which goes back to the 1850's era. I find it very entertaining to look at these "effects" done on purpose and compare them to many things done "by accident". I use HDR sparingly because I personally don't care to "POP" colors that might seem to be un-natural. That said I rest my case. Have a good day.

It seems to me more and more photo enthusiasts are trying their hands at HDR and asking for comments. I've only commented to one individual and will refrain from doing so in the future as I believe most of these attempts at art are nothing short of disastrous. Good photos are turned into images worthy of nothing but the circular file. Out-of-focus photos are now stated to have been created using the Orton effect. Perhaps I'm an old stick in the mud but unless done properly HDR is a waste of everyone's time. By now you can see I am not a fan of HDR and am strongly in favor of natural photography. All that having been said and probably provoking many, I can support different art forms and believe expanding one's knowledge base is commendable but folks...HDR & Orton is not for me. What I'd like to see is a seperate section for HDR & Orton Effect added to this forum (like the macro section) so that when one opens a thread expecting to view realistic photos he/she is not confronted with cartoonish or garrish images. I'd like to know what others think about this and please don't nail me to the cross. I don't advocate not displaying the work of those that believe HDR & Orton are legitimite art forms, I would just like to have them in a collection where one can avoid them at will. Convince me I'm wrong...an old dog can learn new tricks but it may take a while.

Where is the "like" button? I agree with you, I have seen very few that have turned out to be good "art work". But if people are so inclined, let them do it. Just because I do not like most of the results does not mean others feel the same. I feel "each to his own".

Agree with most of you generally, but mostly with Forbescat!
Still..wish Nikon-Canon people would have their own little
place where we don't have to scroll thru so much to find
more general subjects. Then we could all eliminate the dogs,
cats, kids, sunsets or whatever individually annoys us and
save a chunk of time in our day....

i've only tried hdr on two photos, one in camera and one with 3 shot bracketing.this spring i'll experiment more.
the results were interesting, but if the new ones come out good,i don't think it will be necessary to add "hdr" to the caption.

I had the privilege of attending several seminars with Ansel Adams back in the early 70's and to witness the processing of a final image. In spite of the Zone System, an 8x10 camera and hand-mixed chemicals, many of his images took hours of manipulating in the darkroom to achieve that incredible range of B&W tones that he became so famous for achieving. The HDR process basically just expands the dynamic range which the eye can see and transfers it to a two-dimensional image with similar tone ranges. Just remember....everything in moderation!

I agree with you. Naples recently had their first art show of the year, we will have 3 more, 250 artists from around the country exhibited. I saw only 6 photographers, which I thought was low. All but one showed in HDR. They were all giclees printed on gallery wrapped canvas. The colors were neon like, I was very dissapointed. Computer enhanced photos are not photgraphic, art. It is simply taking a so so shot and making it glow with unatural colors.

Not going to waste my time reading all of this, but I like the premise. First of all, "extreme or bad" HDR and Orton are digital art "effects", not straight photography. Some Digital Art is good, some is awful.

I doubt that few can identify a really good HDR edit as HDR, as good HDR is seen as straight photography, with a full range of values in both shadows and highlights.

It's about the final image. Orton, HDR, sepia, B and W, tonemapping, etc - and the point is? -- One can go online and find sites dedicated to any specific type of Photography.
IMO, it's the final image that is important. This is a good general Photog forum. Enjoy it, hate it, open it, dont open it - it's up to you and your purpose for picking up your camera. I learn much from all pics on the forum including the ones I wouldnt look at twice. Use the Forum - dont let it use you.---tg

So........if somebody takes a "landscape" photo with a dog in it......where should they post it. "Landscapes" or "dogs"? No doubt, in this forum, if it is put in landscapes, the landscapists will bitch about having to look at a dog. If it's put in the "dog" section, the dog lovers will bitch about having to look at landscapes.

Maybe we can have a category for "Landscapes", with a sub-category within for "landscapes with dogs", then another "landscapes with horses", then another for "landscapes with chicks in skimpy swim suits".........

Then there's the category for shots taken with ND filters (with a sub category for graduated ND filters). And another category for CPL filters.........and another for Nikons only with ND filters..........OMG!!!

Get my drift?!? Nobody is always going to be happy. We don't need a category for every single subject. That could be endless.

This takes me back to forum users complaining about having to look at boudoir images. Every single time the title of the post said something to the effect of what the subject was.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SUBJECT......DON'T OPEN THE POST! It can't be any simpler then that people!!
So........if somebody takes a "landscape"... (show quote)

I agree with this. When I read the newspaper I don't always see everything sorted out - especially the front page. I see sports, weather, politics, local, human stories, foreign stories, everything on the front page. Yes, there are some other sections of the paper that cover sports, local news, business or poitics, but UHH has some sections already too.

Would you have a "seperate [sic] section" for Ansel Adams, who famously used HDR (the equivalent of) back in the day before computers? There is well-done HDR and the opposite, just as there is well-done "natural" and its opposite.
