What do you mean no heritage? Every person here has a heritage which could and should be celebrated, including the Native Americans . But we should celebrate our personal heritage any way we want without going after someone else. I have been in Mexico and Korea on their Independence Days and celebrated theirs with them. I did not expect or demand them to celebrate the Fourth of July but welcomed them to join me in my celebration.

You guys are missing the point of the issue here. While the Mexicans were celebrating what they have the right to celebrate, the whites decided to suddenly all wear the US flag and stand in force to bully the Mexicans.

How is that okay?

This is in a school that has had constant tension between these groups and it had been passed on from generation to generation since I was there in the 70's. It is a racial problem that came to a head while one group was celebrating "their day" and another group trying to put them down for it. Of course it is going to cause problems.

The whites were the aggressors in this instance, so the judge said the school could ban the wearing of the flag on a certain day. Simple punishment for the group who instigated the problems on this certain day.

Only a racist would see it this way. This is not Mexico and we have no reason to celebrate any other Countrys Holidays. When I am in Mexico I do not expect to celebrate any of our Hoidays nor should we.

WHO asked you to celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

Did somebody tie you down and force you to watch the festivities?

I have watched them in Mexico and no one had to tie me down. It was done in the spirit of celebration of the Country nor did I try to force our independance Day celebration on them when down there.

Arguing with you guys is like arguing with a broken pencil. Pointless.

You don't care who does what to whom, as long as the US flag is not called into question.

This goes way deeper than the flag people. When you understand that, we can pick up from there and continue discussing how the issue should be handled.

See ya

It is their heritage. We just finished with Black History month to celebrate their heritage. Maybe if the schools would educate the kids to the positive things about Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, etc. there would be more understanding. My granddaughter went to a grade school in FL that was only 1/3 white. Mostly black kids and some hispanics. But she learned a lot of tolerance and she learned about a lot of blacks who did a lot for our country. Understanding and the willingness to understand takes away a lot of the hate issues.

The problem is not that you don't understand how the banning will accomplish anything.

The problem is that you don't understand why the flag is being banned in the first place.

I'm slightly appalled at how many people have misunderstood the article and are jumping to conclusions that American rights have been violated .
The court was saying that the school was not in the wrong for taking steps to avert a violent situation.
That is all I read. Nobody was told they cannot wear a flag to school ever again. Why the hate?

Please also consider that in that school, the white students may actually be the minority so have you thought the school faculty were acting on THEIR behalf?

Mexican students, guess what? They are US citizens just like you so called "real Americans"...did somebody really imply they aren't?
Have we again forgotten how many of us "real Americans" are only 2 or 3 generations from arriving in Ellis Island from the old country, unable to speak English, unemployed, poor, burdening the country's resources, hated by others, etc?

And to the idiot that thought Mexico lost at the Alamo...well, actually, they won that battle by a landslide.

I'm outta here before I start bringing the collective IQ of the thread up too high. Later.

The school has no intention of banning Mexico-themed T-shirts, though, on any day of the year.

======================
A Northern California high school's decision to order students wearing American flag T-shirts to turn the garments inside out during a celebration of the holiday Cinco de Mayo was appropriate, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the school officials' concerns of racial violence outweighed students' freedom of expression rights. Administrators feared the American-flag shirts would enflame the passions of Latino students celebrating the Mexican holiday. Live Oak High School, in the San Jose suburb of Morgan Hill, had a history of problems between white and Latino students on that day.

The unanimous three-judge panel said past problems gave school officials sufficient and justifiable reasons for their actions. The court said schools have wide latitude in curbing certain civil rights to ensure campus safety.

"Our role is not to second-guess the decision to have a Cinco de Mayo celebration or the precautions put in place to avoid violence," Judge M. Margaret McKeown wrote for the panel. The past events "made it reasonable for school officials to proceed as though the threat of a potentially violent disturbance was real," she wrote.

The case garnered national attention as many expressed outrage that students were barred from wearing patriotic clothing. The Ann Arbor, Mich.-based American Freedom Law Center, a politically conservative legal aid foundation, and other similar organizations took up the students' case and sued the high school and the school district.

William Becker, one of the lawyers representing the students, said he plans to ask a special 11-judge panel of the appeals court to rehear the case. Becker said he would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court if he loses again.

"The 9th Circuit upheld the rights of Mexican students celebrating a holiday of another country over U.S. student proudly supporting this country," Becker said.

Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican troops defeated a French army of Napoleon III, then considered the mightiest military in the world. It is considered a bigger holiday in the U.S., celebrating Mexican heritage with parades and revelry in many major cities.

I think the children should wear uniforms.

If you're only slightly appalled by this, just keep following the non-photographic discussions and you'll find plenty of comments that are thoroughly appalling!

Our country is made up of many many cultures and celebrating ones heritage should not be a crime.

If any flag is banned, they should ban all flags on this day.
