You obviously haven't been paying attention to the demographic changes over the last 20 years. All this right wing, jingoistic drivel will never amount to a thing. If you think we old people are going to make some kind of a massive change, you've been smoking weed or something. Until voters realize that THE most critical issue the country faces is campaign finance reform, we will remain on a downhill slide. This country was supposed to be controlled by the majority not those with the most money.

It is irritating to constantly hear people on this site touting their military service as if it gives them some kind of patriotic high ground.

I'm a progressive (liberal if you wish) and very much pro gun - even though this doesn't fit your stereotype. I also served over 42 years in the military - including service in Vietnam, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

As for military service giving people the patriotic high ground ---no one has to give them the high ground they earned it with their service as you did. I might even say especially you since 42 years makes you a very rare breed.

When you say you are a progressive what does that mean? What exactly makes one a progressive?

JWT, I am not of your generation but I agree with what you have posted. The US has changed in the last 20 yrs. and I think that it's time that we take our country back. I get tired of Congress and the President telling us what and how to do everything. Time for them to sit back and listen to us tell them what to do.

My Dad was a WWII vet; my uncle was a highly decorated Korean War vet; my brother is a Vietnam vet; I was an Air Force wife. I remember outhouses, ice boxes, and telephone party lines.
I also remember that at the same time “under God” was not in the Pledge of Allegiance, and no one thought that public schools were some how damned. My dad, a patriotic vet, was also a steel mill worker who went on strike with the rest of the union because he realized that without the union he would not be a part of the middle class. He was not considered to be a socialist.
When my brother and I were given polio shots (as per the Polio Vaccine Assistance Act), we were thankful; we didn’t consider this government assistance to our health care to be un-American.
In 1921 the Federal Highway Act made government funds available for new highways which led to the development of Route 66. The Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 paid 90% of the cost of building our Interstate Highway system for 10 years. We have all benefited from this improved transportation with more availability and fresher produce from our farmers, increased tourism, economics from tourism, etc.
The tax rate under Republican President Eisenhower for top earners was 92%; the tax rate for top wage earners under Republican President Reagan was 69.125%; the tax rate for top wage earners under President Obama is 35%.
So don’t tell me that government can’t do anything right; don’t tell me that government should not be involved with our healthcare or our industry; don’t preach to me about taxes. The United States government is “of the people, by the people and for the people.” I am the people; I am part of the 99% of the people.
As part of the 99%, I am proud to pay my taxes. I was an elementary school teacher; my husband earned about the same amount that I did; so we are by no means wealthy. We live in an RV and travel. We could choose a state with no income taxes as our official residence, but we choose to claim our residence in our home state because our children and grandchildren live there; other people who contribute to my state and my country live there. I owe them my tax support.
The “good old days” included the WPA, the CCC, the TVA, polio vaccinations, Social Security, Medicare and many other “public works.” I am a gray haired “geezer” who is a proud liberal and voted for Barack Obama. I voted for the change that President Obama is trying to bring about in this country where solutions are sought, not the status quo.

Excellent points, skane2. The dangerous right wing fanatics are going to ruin this country. It doesn't only belong to them. As you pointed out, it is our country too.
The tea party fanatics only want to "pin the blame on the darky".

Manderson, I take no credit for the piece, I did not write it. Having said that, the one thing I can take credit and/or blame for is that I posted it and I do agree with much of what was said there. The good thing that has come from this posting is that the passions of the American people on this forum have come to the fore and dialogue is being generated both pro and con. However, wanting to take the country back is a passion that I hope that all sides (don't know why we have to have sides) can aspire to. I am talking about taking the country back to a time of good jobs, good pay, and pride in our country. If we are the greatest country in the world, then it's high time we are once again able to demonstrate that and not apologize to anyone for what we are. We really don't need the government taking care of us, and we don't need to have the government creating a large welfare state by borrowing more money to be doled out under the guise of "spreading the wealth around". I hope this makes my position clear on all of this wonderful dialogue.

You shouldn't castigate all those "true Believers", dogmatic,
zealots like yourself.

YOUR nonsensical rants are boring, YOUR selfish attitudes are nothing but stupidity.

Myself like many of the others here have met their obligations and honored their military responsibilities, mine was 1962 to 1970 flying off the Oriskany and the Forrestal. I don't think our service grants us any thing more than the ability to hold our heads high, certainly not any perceived political high ground.

YGTMSM.... you are saying taxes are lower under Obama....wow, simply unreal… your facts (?) are simply half truths, and not all real…

top marginal rates of the 1950s were essentially symbolic—very few actually paid them. In reality the vast majority of top earners faced lower effective rates than they do today.
The tax code of the 1950s allowed upper-income Americans to take exemptions and deductions that are unheard of today. Tax shelters were widespread, and not just for the superrich. The working wealthy—including doctors, lawyers, business owners and executives—were versed in the art of creating losses to lower their tax exposure.
