I am a VERY amateur photographer. actually, I don't consider myself photographer, just a picture taker, some of which I think are pretty good(accident??). what baffles me is that many of you discuss model nos. w/o mentioning the brand. so I usually have no idea what you are talking about. someone showed me a comparison of how some Canon model was better than my Panasonic. I felt kinda bad until I saw that the Canon cost almost 2 1/2 times as much. if it wasn't better..... maybe I should just stick to the non-photography topics.

I noticed that too, leej, I've been taking pictures for many, many years but don't keep up with all the camera numbers or brands. It would be nice if the readers here would mention camera brands.
If you have a camera you're happy with and as you mentioned takes pictures you enjoy, stick with it for a while. Later if you feel you want to move up to a different model, so be it.
As far as prices go, you pay for advanced optics and features. If you feel you don't need them, again so be it. :) :) :)

I hope you are kidding. For me I am always envious of the latest and greatest gear. I can't spend a lot of money all the time. (read: "I am married.") so I have learned or am learning to be happy with what I have. Remember it is not the camera or gear that makes a good photo it is the subject and photographers ability to capture it. Yes, the gear can help but the most important tool is what is between the ears.
Glad to see you on the forum. I love this place, there are so many helpful folks here I have not been able to avoid learning something every time I log in. Have fun.

On thing you'll notice is the mention of say D600 and a
600D. If the "D" (meaning digital) is in front of the number that's a Nikon. When the "D" is behind, that's a Canon.
Does any of you guys remember the Polaroid Swinger? I believe a lot of those cameras were sold.

Not always accurate. Back in 2002 Canon had a 6.3 megapixel body called the D60.

Rule of thumb:
D followed by the number is a Nikon: Nikon D40
The number followed by the D is a Canon: Canon D40
How the rest work: I have no idea.

I think you meant 40D, not D40 for Canon. But in any case it doesn't always follow. I guess you didn't see my post just above your's.
Some of my best picture,s was taken with a Panasonic point and shoot. They were sold along with my others in galleries that buy from me. I have seen people sink thousands of dollars in equipment and can,t take a decent picture if they had too. I have not seen any of your work but you may as good as any one on here.

Excuse me. I'm a newbie here, but it seems to me that the eye behind the lens takes the photo. The camera is only an instrument to achieve an end. Remember, Alfred Stieglitz used a simple box camera.
