Just talking about warranties, no insurance. It's extended through a reputable company...and I'm thinking, if anything...it's for good measure? No one is pushing it...but I have this feeling something will happen, lol. This extended warranty is after the initial first year, and covers everything.
Thanks everyone!

I'm still with you, Lilith. For me, on a pension, this is a major purchase. I don't use credit cards, only cash or debit, and I don't have homeowners insurance. If the camera goes belly up one year and one day from now, I'd be hard pressed to come up with a replacement or hundreds for repairs. As I said before, I don't buy in store extended warrantees since most of the money goes to the retailer. For an additional 5 percent of the purchase price (instead of 42%) I get 5 years worth of peace of mind for cheap, and I can afford that. Your mileage may vary. :)

I bought a Nikon D5100 from Best Buy with a two year warranty. It paid off for me. After a year the shutter malfunctioned and need to be repaired.

Get an American Express card (no fees) and anything you pay for it with gets an automatic 1 year extended warranty free! Also, a 60 day no questions asked guaranteed return policy. JD Powers has rated Amex the best card for the past 7 years straight.

That is indeed a good feature of Amex... However, it's not a card I will be likely to get: When we applied for an American Express card a number of years ago, we got a letter saying that our annual income was not high enough and our application was denied. Even though we had no debts and whatever bills came our way were paid the day we got them. Even our VISA at the time was paid off in full every month.
So when about three years ago we started to get Amex promotional material about every single month, I took one of their letters, wrote on it that when we wanted their card, we were denied, and now they can keep it - then mailed it in their own pre-paid envelope. Haven't heard from them since, hurray!!!!

Yes, you can. eBay is not the online yard sale it used to be. A lot of businesses also sell on eBay. You can set your search to only include "new" (on the left side of the screen, scroll down). Watch the seller's feedback and only buy from those with high numbers, stay away from the newbies and you'll be fine. I try to stay with USA sellers, even if I have to pay a little more. Also pay with PayPal and, if you do get a bad deal (unlikely), it's easier to get your money refunded. Most items on eBay qualify for SquareTrade warranties and most of the "new" items come with mfr's warranty - make sure it's "USA" warranty and not gray market. If the ad doesn't say, ask...if you don't get a response, buy from someone else.

This is a tad bit off subject,,, but above you said.. "Stay away from Newbies" I understand the thinking, but HOW will a Newbie become a non Newbie if no one purchases from them...... hummmmmm

I am not one that normally buys extended warranties. but when I bought my first DSLR a canon 10D at best buy, my wife talked me into buying one.
I am glad she did. after about 3 1/2 years on the 4 year warranty the 10d had shutter problems. so I took it into best buy, they sent it off and when it came back it was missing the cap on the camera body. I told the person behind the counter about it and she said let me get a manager. I was expecting some hassle but the manager said get a new camera. I told her I don't need a new camera just the cap. the manager said "we can argue about it or you can get a new camera." at that time the 30D was out so I end up with a 30d for no charge! I bought a new warranty for it.
a few years later we were going on a cruise and I knew the 30d needed cleaning which is part of the coverage so I brought it in about a month before we were leaving.
it finally came back 4 days before we were leaving. it was worse then when I brought it in! I could see the dust specks on the sensor looking at the lcd. so they said they will send it in again. I told him there is no way it will be back before we were leaving, and he said if its not back the day before you leave I'll get you a new camera. it didn't make it back and I ended up with a 50d! which I purchased another warranty! after a few weeks they called and said my camera came in and asked if I would like to buy it back at a discount.
A few years later the 50d needed cleaning and I knew I had some events I wanted to shoot in a couple month so I thought I would take it in so I would be sure I get it back before the events. well this time they lost it. a week before the events I talked with the manager and walked out with a 7d. which I purchased another warranty!
this don't sound very good for who ever does their repairs but the warranty is good! so I originally bought a 10d and moved up to a 7d at no cost other then buying the warranty for each camera.
my 7d needs cleaning, but I think I'll wait until the 7dII comes out before I send it in!

I bought one with my D90 never used it. Bought one with my D600. Sure they cost a some money, but give a lot peace of mind if you drop them. I decided a long time ago that my equipment whether cheap or expensive will go with me regardless of the terrain, risk etc. No sense having good stuff, then leaving it at home because I t might get banged around, stolen or lost at sea.

For loss and damage, all my photography gear is on my household insurance... more than enough cover at minimal excess on the basic premium..and a lot cheaper than extended warranties on each individual item.

All this sounds right to me, I can't say never bought a extended warranty, but it was only 1 time for a computer and I never needed it. I do know and use the warranty deal with credit cards but as far as I know it only works for things with a 1 year warranty which doubles that and you have a 2 year warranty from day you buy it, check with credit card company I don't think all have that feature, and yes I have used that credit card warranty 1 time to fix a video camera where you have to pay for the repairs in the first place then you send receipts to card company and you get reimbursed. LOL! It's a catch-22...I'll buy from newbie if it's under $100, anything over that (and most camera bodies are over), I stick with established sellers. I figure they can establish themselves on small stuff since feedback doesn't show prices.

I buy the warranties as well...but I don't get them from store, I go online and register the product and get an extended warranty from the mfr. They're usually cheaper than the store and they can be renewed (and transferred if I sell them item before the warranty is up). I usually use a Visa to buy them, but the extended warranty that comes with the Visa doesn't cover tech support and I've used more tech support more than the repair part.

Thank you all very much!!!
I really appreciate it!!!
Stableduck, that is an amazing warranty story!!! Was that just through the store or a separate entity warranty service?

It was just through the store. I don't have any other insurance on my equipment other then what my home owners covers.
