You and everyone else recommending a MAC must have missed the part about his $1000 budget. MACs are nice machines but pricey.

I use a 17" HP laptop with 8GB of RAM when I'm on vacation. I have Photoshop CC loaded on it and it works quite well for PP. When I get home I transfer the images to my desktop and go through them again but rarely do I need to tweak what I did on the laptop.

My recommendation, if you can handle the weight, is to get a 17" laptop with as much RAM and as large a hard drive as you can afford. I would definitely not get less than 6GB RAM. As I recall I paid about $800 for mine three years ago.

You didn't say what your desktop was, Mac or PC, but I would get the same for your laptop. Eliminates compatibility issues.

Good advice...if you have a PC at home, get a PC; if you have a Mac at home, get a Mac. Both my current laptop (an HP) and my last laptop (a Dell) were custom orders and both were under $1000. By ordering custom made you can tailor it to your needs. Call on the phone to order, don't do it online. The salesperson can help you build a machine to fit your needs and also has discounts and specials you won't get if you order online.

LOL!! I still have one (desktop, that is)...I'm not giving up my 24" monitor for nothing! The laptop is nice and convenient, but even with a 17" screen it doesn't come close to the desktop for photo editing.

Is your desktop an iMac? Very true, the real estate provided by a 24 inch is hard to argue with - my son, a professional photographer sears by his iMac for PP

Actually I found very little compatibility issues - a jpg file is the same on a PC as on a Mac. One thing to remember tho is that there are software costs associated with a switch from PC to Mac - finding a replacement for your go to software. However, that may be easier than you think. For example, I have used OpenOffice for my WP,Spread sheet and it is free on both Mac and PC. Lightroom and other high power PP software may be a different story - I don't know since I use Photoshop Elements which is not very expensive.

No it's a PC...I built it a few years ago and have upgraded it as needed.

I am a life-long PC user who switched to MACs about 2 years ago. I will NEVER go back to a PC. Especially for photography and/or video, you simply can't beat a MAC. There is just something about the seamless simplicity of the MAC OS that I really enjoy! For on-the-road use, I'd suggest the MACBook Air. If you want to use it as a primary computer at home as well, then look at the MacBook Pro.

I'm not normally an Apple guy but for what he wants to do, I agree completely.

I'm a recently retired Windoze IT guy 15 years as the MIS manager of a Boston area law firm. I have a couple of Windows machines, but my go to are a 27 inch iMac and a 15 inch MacBook Pro. Just so I have Windows when I'm traveling I also run Windows 8.1 on my Mac Pro on a boot camp partition.

Just love the Macs, as many have already said, it's more $$$ but well worth it. Worth mentioning my Mac Book Pro was a refurb, looked as good as new when it arrived at my door, the only giveaway is the non-branded plain white box they are packed and delivered in.

Ok a desktop is something affixed or can be unfixed to a frame which is placed underneath the desktop, it can be made of just about any material. You can use this desktop for a multitude of uses and can even use it to place a computer on top of to relieve you carrying it or having to place it on the floor. Hope this helps.. ;-)
