My Gila Monster is actually a Monitor Lizard, I believe. Sorry about the mistaken identity.

I ran into a Gila Monster on a quail hunt in the desert South of Phoenix. I shot a bird that dropped under a near-by tree. When I went to retrieve the bird I found it in the mouth of the big lizard! My immediate reaction was to softly say, as I back-tracked way, " Glad I could provide you lunch, big guy!" He was about 18" long with a very bright orange and black patterned back. The bird probably dropped right on him. He is the only one I have ever seen outside the Phoenix Zoo, and I have lived in Arizona well over 60 years.

Great story! I don't think you'd want him to take a bite out of you as you retrieved the quail.

Looks like a monitor lizard to me, not a Gila Monster.

interesting photo--I have never seen one before so enjoyed the photo

He's actually a monitor lizard but it was interesting to learn about Gila monsters! I had his identity wrong...

Definitely not a Gila Monster. Looks more like a Monitor Lizard of some kind.
