If you want to say that something isn't what OP thinks it is, you should say what you think it is. Sorry.

My Gila Monster is actually a Monitor Lizard, I believe. Sorry about the mistaken identity.
I ran into a Gila Monster on a quail hunt in the desert South of Phoenix. I shot a bird that dropped under a near-by tree. When I went to retrieve the bird I found it in the mouth of the big lizard! My immediate reaction was to softly say, as I back-tracked way, " Glad I could provide you lunch, big guy!" He was about 18" long with a very bright orange and black patterned back. The bird probably dropped right on him. He is the only one I have ever seen outside the Phoenix Zoo, and I have lived in Arizona well over 60 years.

Great story! I don't think you'd want him to take a bite out of you as you retrieved the quail.
Looks like a monitor lizard to me, not a Gila Monster.

Good shot HT, I wouldn't like to wake up facing one of those first thing in the mornng.
Definitely not a Gila Monster. Looks more like a Monitor Lizard of some kind.
