Ok, the round baler.

Because they are round, these bales don't have to be picked up out of the field before the next rain. (Just think of the ages old hay or straw stack)

Sometimes they get wrapped in a long package and then sold overseas (well maybe just from PEI to somewhere else in N. America).

In contrast the rectangular bale has to be under cover before the next rain. & that bale can be from say 75 lbs to 200 lbs. A 125 lb rectangular bale can feed 3 adult cattle for a couple days. & I used to fetch them and open them all the time, growing up. & now, I often see a round bale out in a field in the summer.

& now I wonder why I didn't take a pic of a semi trailer being loaded with these bales as I could have the day I took most of these.

I so agree catgirl, the Budweiser Clydesdales are such beautiful horses. How disappointing....but love the last shot of them as you stopped a whole lot of action of folks who got close up with expectations of getting that perfect shot.

One of these days I need to go across the river and tour the brewery and see the horses. I've been on site once to work at a function (passing out samples outdoors at a vendor party) but never had an opportunity to do anything on my own. I did drive through the grounds when they had their annual Christmas light display as well. Very impressive!

Such nice sharp shots Pat. You seem to always get nice white snow with definition....can't seem to do that and typically use the snow scene setting for my snow shots. I think I should have gone out further into the yard when hubby was blowing us out to get a different perspective of the snow flying.....love your; and as for the treadmill....I really need to move my '.....' and get back on it one of these fine days.

Here' my entry. I guess it meets the criteria. It's a nest-building great blue heron at extreme low altitude.

They can be stacked outside without the wrap. Granted the wrap does protect even better.

Found few more samples of freeze action images. The first one I threw a bunch of green pencils in the air and took a shot with flash which froze the pencils in mid-air. The 2nd one is of a Chinese long-sleeves dancer and the 3rd is a stop-motion image of an amusement ride.

More good ones, especially the pencils! ;) (pg. 16)

Good Morning! Welcome to 'Freezing the Action,' one of my favorite topics! When researching the topic, it didn't take long to discover that there are many differing opinions among professional photographers as to what the term, 'freezing he action' really means. For most photographers, it means capturing the motion of a subject with sharpness and no blur. For others, it means capturing the motion of the subject with sharpness and no blur, but also capturing the velocity of the movement in the background. Here are the links for two good articles demonstrating each technique:

Stopping the action with a fast shutter speed - your photo is captured, with subject sharp, and no blur in the picture.

Freezing the action in which your subject is sharp while still showing the velocity of movement. This can be obtained by physically following/moving the subject with your camera after you have locked the subject into focus.

Many of you are already masters at freezing the action. I can't wait to see your examples!
