Looking for a Canon NB 6L battery for a canon PowerShot SD 1200 IS Digital Elph. The price for an original canon battery is close to half the price of the camera. It is just needed as an extra.
I seen some cheep batteries and would like to know what would be recommend.
I have suffered the price of canon branded batteries for my SLR’s but this is just soemthing I leave in my car. It is actually surprisingly capable in good light.
Comments on good sources for SLR would be also appreciated.

I've tried the generic batteries and had them fail after a few months. I only use Canon brand and know I can get several years out of them.

This has been my experience as well.

Stick with your brand name batteries. There are many posts on this forum from shooters who have had "internal damage" done to components within the camera while using "off-brand" batteries. With a $$$camera why use inferior batteries for a savings of what??? - maybe 10 or 15 dollars??

I also understand from some posts on this forum that Canon and Nikon (and probably others) have enabled their newer model cameras to detect and refuse "off-brand" batteries. Again, why piddle over something as inexpensive (relatively speaking) to the photographic process as a battery?
Good Shooting

I have a 70D, one of Canon's newest models. When I bought it B&H also included a 2nd battery, an off brand. Works just fine.

The reputation of a particular brand of battery is more important then whether or not it has a camera brand name. Last I knew neither Canon nor Nikon had their own battery factory. They buy them from outside sources like most everybody else. The same sources that make the "off brands". It's doubtful they even buy from a particular supplier exclusively. Every new battery spec will be put out for bid and there is no guarantee that the same manufacturer will get every bid or that they will get their contract renewed when it expires. Same thing with the battery in your car. There are only 2 manufacturers of lead-acid automotive batteries in the US. Doesn't matter what it says on the outside, if it's in your vehicle and it was made in the US it came from one of those 2 companies. In both cases, cameras and cars, it's all about the manufacturing specs of the battery and the reputation it has earned, not what name is on it.

But, in the issue of camera batteries, I read in Shutterbug where both Nikon and Canon, in their newer models, are rejecting batteries not branded. There have been several posts on UHH recently confirming the rejection of "Off Brand" batteries by some of the newer models of camera. Also, recently here in UHH, there have been instances where folks have posted that "Off Branded" batters have gotten hot and melted, etc. etc.
Like I said earlier, if you pay the big $$$$ for a C or N (or whatever brand) body, why screw with a battery that may or may not function as hoped when the cost is less than $100. And, if what we read is true, most brand names are going to institute battery recognition software where the "off brand' batteries will be simply rejected.

It's hard to draw conclusions when the only description is "off brand". No telling what some people have tried to put in their cameras, often through ignorance. "Well, it worked in my other Nikon so it should work in this one". That kind of thing. Then there are the people who are going to buy the cheapest battery they can find and wonder why they have problems. On top of that, even the best batteries, or best of anything, will have occasional problems. Even the branded stuff. As I recall, Dell laptops had an issue with battery fires some years ago with the factory batteries. Ask Boeing about the batteries their supplier provided for the 787. Any camera manufacturer could end up having the next spectacular battery problem in the news. As far as battery rejection by some cameras, I seriously doubt it. Just because 2 batteries look the same and will both fit the same camera doesn't necessarily mean they have the same outputs or that the interface has the same terminals in it. Now that I would believe could cause rejection. I can tell you for a fact that my 70D, one of Canon's latest models, works just fine with either the Canon or the off brand batteries that I have. So did my T3i. Buy a good quality anything with a good track record and you will most likely have good results.

I've used aftermarket batteries for years in any number of digital cameras DSLR's & otherwise without a hitch... If they were so bad, why would a reputable store like B&H or Adorama carry them ?... Many are made in the same factories as the OEM versions but just branded with a different name. That said, there is a move afoot with Nikon as described above where the use of an aftermarket battery will disable certain camera functions, but I doubt that will be around long as it will drive customers away & it's just a matter of time before technology finds a way to get around it...

I have a Canon T-3 aka:1100D and have use off brand batts. with no problem what so ever. Check with B&H Photo or Adorama for as they sell grey batteries. These batts. are about one forth of what Canon wants. How many battery plants do you think are pushing out batts. just for Canon. I say go try a set and you will be very pleased. My batts are still good after a year of shooting in ice rinks (ice hockey) and keep on ticking. They are so cheap that after a year I dump them and purchase new ones. I am not worried that I may lose some shots due to batt. failure or that the brand name gives me 3000 shots and the off brand only gives me 2999.
Good luck and let us know what you decide and how they work out for you.
