OK everyone...am planning an auto trip this summer. Starting in northern CA....heading to Maine, with stops planned at MT Rushmore and Niagra Falls. Then heading south to loop thru Nashville, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Vegas and San Diego.....then back home. Taking my recently purchased Canon T32i. My question: any suggestions of other good photo stops along this route? Thanx so much in advance.
If your going to Mt Rushmore a stop at Wall Drugs is a must. Also, on the way across SD the movie set for Dances with Wolves is well worth the time. The Corn Palace in Iowa as well as John Wayne's boy hood home in Winterset, Ia.
As I am sure you have realized by now, it would take somewhere close to 40 years or more to stop and see the major you only live once locations across this great land we call home.
Have a great trip and if you take the time and open your mind and heart your going to find that the best treasures are the people you meet along the way. I have been traveling mostly through the mid west for more than 40 years and can honestly say that everything I have seen is somewhere near a teaspoon full out of a bucket.
Crazy Horse....2010....and the rainbow.
Crazy Horse
Devils Tower
The Needles
It would be sad to come across the country and not take in Washington DC - and I would highly suggest taking the Blue Ridge Parkway to Tenn since you are going that way.

There are probably 100 million photo stops on that trip if you didn't stop at only the tourist traps. You still would barely scrape the surface of what's available. Tourist traps alone could give you 10 million photo ops that have already been taken 100 million times.
Personally I could spend the whole summer in the Rocky Mountains on Trail Ridge Road and never even leave Colorado. I could spend the whole Fall in southwestern Maine and never drive more than 30 miles in any direction.

I'd look at the route you're planning on taking (like I-90) and check out the communities you'll be going through. Then review them on line. Or, we do our searching based on what we like to do. We like to find and photograph waterfalls, covered bridges and lighthouses. We search "waterfalls in GA" or "Lighthouses in MI" (MI has more Lighthouses than any other state) or "Covered Bridges In IN" (I think IN has more Covered Bridges than any other state) etc. When we find a item that we want to visit (Love Niagara Falls) we'll use the internet to see what else their may be to see and do in that area.
I live on the road for 10 years. I use AAA motor club, just tell them where your going, they can tell you places you wouldn't see other wise. Can you go camping in the heart of Orlando for $5. a night I did. LOL anGODbless

If you are going through Minneapolis, keep going East through Michigan's upper Penninsula, throughTequamanon Falls, down across the Mackinac Bridge and the Straits, see Mackinac Island, and if possible, go to Cross Village, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Charlevoix, then over to I-75, down Michigan to Sarnia, through Canada to Niagra Falls. You will love the scenery, and the Picture Op's are unreal!! Paul Harvey dubbed Northern Michigan the most beautiful place to vacation in the World. ENJOY!!!

In Arizona there is the petrified forest and Flagstaff...the rest is "Gods country" because no else want's it.
You should see the Saguaro Ntl Park outside of Tuscon. If not the park itself, at least that area. Outside of the little town of Cave Creek are good exemplars.
What about the sandstone monuments at Sedona or the much-discussed-here Antelope Canyon?
Grand Canyon? if the south rim seems too cowded, the north rim is much quieter.
CAVE CREEK sguaro with modern adobe - the hill behind it is populated with saguaros
CAVE CREEK saguaros outside of Rancho Mañana
SEDONA Cathedral Rock & Oak Creek - photo was taken in a downpour
The Badlands National Park is on your route. Don't miss it. Unique and special among our Parks.
Provencetown, MA one of a few places to watch sunsets and rise over the ocean in one spot, nice whale watches and smoe very interesting people.

Probably can't stop and have to be the passenger to photograph them while moving?
