I would not think of buying a car from an on-line source based only on reviews. So why should buying a camera be any different?

If we don’t patronize our local stores soon there will be none. Look at hardware stores: I love shooting the breeze with a local shopkeeper to get the advice and tips of his experience for my DIY projects. Yes, the HD is cheaper, but try and get any information from the sales staff – rare if at all. If we don’t keep local merchants in business we may as well buy everything from overseas!

One of our local camera stores has loaned us lighting equipment for a Christmas charity photo shoot. Put him out of business and I doubt any of the mail order companies will step in to help us out.
I have friends who shop the stores and then buy on line. This bad habit will only hurt us in the future.

SHOP LOCAL – KEEP AMERICAN SMALL BUSINESS ALIVE.

P.S. I have bought from B&H photo, but only when I walked into their NY city store. If you have not been there, you need to make a pilgrimage.

I don't think you'd get much of an argument from anyone here, except for the fact that not all of us live in a retail-dense area like southern California or Manhattan. In my case, the nearest "camera" store is about 45 minutes and a $4.00 bridge toll away, and it's a Ritz anyway. I'm sure that most people here would much rather walk into a LOCAL establishment, see/touch/smell the merch, and buy there, if they could. It's simply not a viable option for many people anymore. I have a Walmart about four miles away. There is almost NO retail presence anywhere around me except for second-hand thrift stores, tattoo parlors, and karate dojos. The city fathers up the road DENIED a permit for a SuperWalmart a few years ago, because it would have competed with the ONE grocery store in town that is owned and operated by a bigwig in the village. So we pay premium prices for almost all perishable goods, because the nearest alternative is over 20 miles away. Yeah, buying local is great. If you want a tattoo or an ear peircing.

While buying on line has its advantages, if you don't support your local camera shop it will go away. I support mine and being able to discuss problems with a knowledgeable person has been important. I end up paying more because of local sales tax but sometimes it is worth the difference. The salesman I deal with is a former Nikon rep and it works for me.

The reason I was so sorry to see the photo stores leave was two fold ! Specifically was the close expertise of true help and supply of needs. The second was I worked part time for the professional who sold me the equipment for my photography trip through life. I continued with the same name until they closed. I could get equipment cheaper in New York even though I part timed at home - - - but I did not ! Helping home area was important to me but B & H treats me good now !

You can get surprised even on the best of sites. Many sites have cameras and lenses that are listed as both USA and Imported for the same item at the same price. The difference is usually in the warranty and rebates, if any. USA doesn't mean Made In The USA. It means it has the manufacturer's USA warranty on it. Imported would have a store warranty. Also, prices are quite consistant among the reputable dealers. If you see super low pricing on a particular item at a competing dealer, be suspicious.

Like I said before we don't have a "Camera store" in Abilene, Tx but a Best Buy that's uusually understocked on camera supplies.
If we did I would frequent it as much as possible. Your city or town always benifits from local bussiness and I support my town every chance I get. Sometimes, if we're talking double the price I forget all that stuff I just said though..

Have bought both ways, prefer having a live store person to talk to instead of waiting, being re-directed, receiving ads I don't want, etc, etc. Most time u can negotiate w/ the store if u tell them what on line offers.

I buy mostly from Adarama. They stand by their products. If ever a problem with the item (they take it back). No questions
