Cholly, my first 35mm SLR was a Minolta in 1992 and the 50mm lens that came with it was one of the sharpest all purpose lenses I have ever had.

I have other Zeiss glass such as a spotting scope that is exceptional, but not light.

I bought my first Minolta in '78 and kept it for 25 years.

And you are 100% correct; there is NO such thing as a "light" Zeiss lens.

Cholly, the first link is an exceptional article. I think it is the best I have read so far about the new Sony full frames against a great Nikon camera. It gives me a lot to think about.

Joe, the "Quote Reply" link in each message includes the post you are commenting on in your reply, like yours above. It's easy to follow along in this thread because it's your topic and you are quickly responding to people, but it may make more complex threads easier to follow.

And welcome to UHH! :-)

Cholly, When I purchased Sony A7r you recommended an instruction book. I signed up but lost the author's name. Can you please send it again. I am assuming the book is not out yet.
By the way I am extremely happy with my purchase, although I should have waited a little longer since the price came down a little at B&H. I love the EVF, I always get sharp images. Considered purchasing Leica old lenses but I think it will be wise to stick with Carl Zeiss lenses.

I'm not CHOLLY, sorry, but if you let me I can weigh in on the Zeiss glass issue. I recently bought into the Sony system, the full frame A99, specifically for the opportunity to shoot Zeiss glass with autofocus. As a bonus, I get the superb Sony G tele zooms. They all are very costly, but the images are really like art, and unarguably superbly executed from a sharpness, contrast, color rendition point of view. I think they're the best out there when in combination with the A99. I'm sure they're at least as good with the A7R!
Btw, CHOLLY put me onto the book by Friedman, which I found absolutely indispensable. It's just very smartly written, and quite insightful.

Thank you, I think Friedman was supposed to write an instruction
book for Sony A7r and I could not remember the name. I have to do some checking now that I know the last name. I also have to check Sony G tele zooms. Thanks again

And btw, the Sony G tele-zooms to get are the SECOND iteration of whichever model has it available ("SSM ii" or just "G 2"). They're outstanding.

According to the website, the A7/A7R book is to be released "in early 2014" which I assume means soon.

With the LA-E4 A to E mount adaptor you can use any A mount lens on your A7R and have it fully functional.

Thanks for the tip! I am going to have a new question soon about the new Zeiss 35mm for the new Sony full-frame cameras.

I'm not sure. I find a 35mm is good for people group shots, but otherwise it's kind of boring, the images with a 24mm are much more interesting. Of course, I don't use zooms and I don't have a 50mm lens either...

Anand, I agree that the 24 is more interesting as far as landscapes go, and possibly for people group shots too. I personally think the 50mm is the most boring, and don't blame you at all for not having/ using one. The 35mm focal length and perspective for me is good for the group shots, but I go to somewhere between 24 and 28mm on my landscapes. I, however, do this via my 24-70 zoom (on the A99). I probably get more use out of a 28mm than a 35mm, truth be told, but that 35mm Zeiss is really choice glass, and would make some beautiful black and white street art.

With the 24-70mm, do you find you're either shooting at 28-24mm or at 70mm?

I expect every Sony Sonnar T* FE lens to be really choice glass, I would just wait for the 24mm. I can see your point of "street art" being a niche for the 35mm lens.
