Linda, Linda: Ah done thout aboyt you're problem AND I caint think uv athing,,,maybe you ken ask somewun else. Al

P.S. Maybe you can get a hint from this note. Your spelling, punctuation and grammar are really bad. Try reading your owner's manual to improve your photographic skills.

Alyn, Linda did not ask for criticism on her wording, but help with taking photos of snow, maybe look at your own first sentence. I hope all other suggestions have helped her. Cheers, Nancy J

Al, Al : Your harsh comment is unwarranted, since Linda's "stream-of-consciousness" approach has been part of literature for almost a century. Naturally, grammarians shudder when they encounter it, but blogs and twitter and e-mails have upended the rules of spelling and structure in much the same way as the abstractionists and atonalists disrupted the comfortable methodology of the romanticists. Forums like this are open discussions, not rule-based classes with standards tests. Enjoy the differences of expression!

I would invest in a gray card, and shoot a custom white balance. Then take great photos of snow. Be sure to shoot the gray card in the same light as the snow you are shooting.

Today I took some pictures of some real heavy snow scenes where i live (atleast for now) with drifts and major snow falling, and reviewed the pcitures I took, the drift scene just came out as a blur and the actual scenes of the snow everything looks kind of with a brownish hue or sepia, and compared it another snow scene that I took back in December in another area, which was much closer to the city, but the beginning of upstate NY, (rockland county) and it was the first snow, and the scenes were so much more sharper, with much more clarity and color...is it because of the time of year? the area? the kind of snow, (the first ones were snow mixed with ice) I'm confused because these new ones look like a boring brown sepia color and the others were so vibrant - I'm beginning to wonder if it is the area where i took them? or the time of year, or just the photographer (me) lol...the settings were the same and this was taken with a Nikkon Coolpix 12.0, but the first snow was not a major snowstorm like this one, and was taken about 3 months ago...right at the beginning of winter, and this area looks like the movie straight out of Fargo the movie....Any suggestions, plus it seems certain things came in like a bush with snow on it with a different color brown...more of a reddish brown, which is nice, but dont know why....I'm a rookie and starting to take pics everyday, but the snow scenes are getting kinda old, and so is the winter...but had to take these because of practice, practice, practice in any kind of weather. Thanks....

Linda, I don't think anybody has mentioned Kelvin temperatures to you, so I recommend that you google the web page below for a clear and concise definition as well as its relevance to digital photography. Unless you have no financial problems, a Kelvin meter is probably not for you, but the scales of light warmth and coolness should be enough to guide you, and the tips on settings are certainly valuable.

"White Balance And Color Temperature In Digital Photography" by Jim Altengarten

Good luck!

The camera attempts to balance the exposure to neutral gray. Since so much of your scene is white, it stops down to reduce the exposure. You'll find the darker scene shows more shades in the bright areas than one in which the snow is rendered as white. I found a similar effect at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico.

True, looks like pig latin to me, maybe she can improve on your skills, or were you trying to be funny, can't understand a word you wrote.

Talk about writing skills, this is about photography...weird.

lol....they have nothing better to do, I'm here to learn about photography and to get better at it, because I love it and have loved it since I was a kid, not for a spelling quiz, or grammer lesson, if I wanted that, I would go to a site for that...people are so strange sometimes.

Mine just came out grey, or brownish, I keep saying i need to download, and I do, how many pictures can I take of snow, and, have some really good ones too of covered bridges, and beautiful waterfalls and streams, those were taken with the D3000 about a month ago, I find now that taking anymore snow scenes unproductive, and boring, unless ofcourse the east river turns into complete ice and people can walk on it, then that would be something to take a picture of, and, always wanted to take pictures of snow falling on Palm Trees in South Florida, but it never happened, atleast when I was living there. That would of been something....

We were just out again yesterday doing some shootinfg in snow. Bright sun and relatively blue skies. Opened up .7stop from meter reading and snow was white enough for me. You just have to watch out for those "yellow" streaks in the snow!!!

I was going to download all the pictures from my D3000 winter scenes as promised, and also the pictures I took from my Coolpix S3000 which had those brownish sepia snow scenes and could not believe it that i could not find the USB Cords for both cameras to transfer the pictures, I'm really upset, both cameras were in seperate boxes and taken care of well, and only found their chargers, I have not downloaded pictures on my computer in almost a year, the computer crashed last march and didnt get another one until recently, and wonder because I moved during this time if I left both of them where I used to live, since I forgot about those cables and packed the chargers in the boxes, I am on the phone now with Nikkon trying to see if i can order them. one is USB Cable UC-16 for Coolpix and the other one is USB cable UC-E4, for D3000. does anyone know where i can buy them locally??? I've been waiting on the phone for Nikkon for atleast a half an hr, I've also sent in the lens from the D3000, and have had no response from them, I cant believe that both USB cords are missing, and both cameras were in separate boxes, Is there any alternate USB cable that can be used, its funny I have the chargers to both and another USB cord, but it didnt fit, it was for a cell phone,,lol, what a ditz, if its not one thing its another and want to start showing these pics, its been too long i havent shown any of my work, almost a whole yr. Any suggestions about these USB Cords would help, it would be great if there was one desigated cord to fit all of Nikkon Cameras, still waiting on phone for them, 45 minutes...ill probably get an answer from you guys faster than them. Thanks in advance for any feedback. Linda

Will Nikkon be able to send me a USB cable UC-34.D3000? Does anyone know anyother way or any other USB Cord what will fit to download pics on the D3000, Im also missing the USB Cable for Coolpix, but think, that one may be part of the charger not sure its been awhile, I have been trying to get in touch with Nikkon on the phone buts its impossible, been kept on hold for almost an hr, also would like to know how long does it take for them to send me any type of confirmation since I sent them a lens to fix 7 days ago, been trying to get in touch with them...and have received no word, sent it thru UPS..This is what happens when you procrastinate and let things that are not what you love doing take place of what you do love doing...and wait too long...any feedback would help. Thanks...Linda

Sorry Im replying so much later, but used my other camera the other day, it was 70 degrees and sunny, and there wasnt anymore snow, but upstate new york, there isnt any green either yet, and went to a place where it was so beautiful with waterfalls, and an old watermill, and tooks pics with my coolpix S3000 (because it is small and wasnt sure I was going to take any pics) and once again, everything came out brown, even the waterfalls, and yes some of the area does look brown, because the snow just melted and the water looks sort of brown, but the whole picture came out with a brownish hue, and took several different shots and it didnt matter where, is it the area here???? I never saw that before I lived here..lol..and was wondering is it possible that its just the energy here or air quality, ??? not sure why that was happening again...just dont get it...same deal with the D3000 in the snow, same area...if anyone has any suggestions or information on it, please let me know, it baffles me...Thanks LindaArt
