Hi Ree! You can make it work if you have the stuff in you to love it and work for it. If you do good work it will get around. But you will have to love it A LOT.:):)
Post this in the main photo section with your questions. There are pros here to help you with all your questions.
The start up will be hard. But the work will be awesome!

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I've been reading books on the business end of it as well as the expense of it and I'm looking forward to the journey!

Hello everyone, my name is Ree and in the nx few weeks I'm going to investing in a Canon or Nikon. I've been researching these 2 cameras for a couple of years now. I want to start a new career in photography. Eventually I would like to concentrate on family portraits, graduations and babies. But to generate some income as quickly as possible what type of photographs should I be looking to do right off the rip. My husband just retired as cop after 25 years of service and this is something I have been interested in for quite while and think it could really be a fantastic source of income, it is the one business our neighborhood doesn't have and it's very family oriented. Very excited to get you alls feedback!

I don't think there is a income as quickly as possible to be made, especially in photography. It is just like other businesses, it is foremost that, a business. One has to generate a market, which in todays world is becoming harder and harder. There will also be quite a large overhead. Advertising (even today) will swallow quite a sum ($). How much experience do you have doing that, besides being fluent in all aspects of photography?

[quote=Ree]The Canon / Nikon has been discussed forever! When I bought my DSLR I zero'd in on one of each. I found a computer link that had comparisons. There were about 100 features. Almost every one was the same. It does not matter for quality. David

Hi speters, I think you may be overthinking my intentions. In my years of reading and researching Photography I know that lens, props and software is costly. I know of someone taking photos of families at a reunion and while most people have a point & shoot they were lining up to pay for a photo and looking at the photos I know I could've done a better job, there was no a big "overhead". Understand I'm not belittling the business, but there are innovative ways with a little creativity to generate a quick income especially with the right equipment. My intention is to eventually have a smal, word of mouth studio in my neighborhood. Thank you for sharing

It sounds like you are coming up a number based on something you may have heard, read or been told regarding that specific businesses experience. I expect my work to do the advertising, word of mouth is still BIG. I'm going to have the name registered and create a web domain. Times Have Changed...

Well,, the overhead starts there, to have a business named and registered, expect to pay at least around 5 grand for that (and that's pretty cheap).

Clearly you are behind the times. May I suggest that unlearn the last2 decades and open your mind to what the cost are for generating more business and staying relevant. What you just stated simply isn't true. The cost for registering a business varies from state to state and generally it's under $200.00. I'm going to bid you a farewell. Try to surround yourself with young, new, up and coming talent you will be surprised how much you can still learn!
