You want to get there early cause They pass out free ticket for Pearl Harbor. The other tours cost money. When we were there, we saw the Pear Harbor first then the rest of the other tours.

I was there in October 2012, and took my D300 with a battery pack and a 70-300 mm zoom. I left my bag with the rest of the gear the trunk of the car and encountered no problems.

The only restrictions at Pearl Harbor involves bags, large purses etc. Just a few short months ago I visited Pearl Harbor, The battleship Missouri including the battle stations tour as well as the Air museum. I carried my usual D800 and a 24/70 2.8 Nikkor lens...there were no restrictions, even in the deep interior of the ship. All of which was great to see.

Has anyone gone to Pearl Harbor Memorial in the lasst year or so? If so did you takea large camera sucgh as a big Canon 7D or Nikin 800? Everyone seems to be dancing around the question. Only one person said they went with a niukon 3100>

I don't think the average person is going to react to the size difference between the D3100 and the D800, unless there is a grip attached. The lens will make a big difference, though, especially between the 55-200mm "kit" and the 70-200mm f/2.8.

[quote=LFingar]I did not see any restrictions when I was there a few years ago. They may mean large format cameras with tripod. I had my long lens and standard. Canon 2D. No one said anything. David

I was on the same site and I understand that cameras and camcorders are allowed, but someplace on the site it was definitely stated that no large cameras were permitted. I don't know if they mean large as in commercial video cameras or large as in DSLRs. It would seem pretty silly, but we have all seen the gov't do even sillier things. I was hoping to hear from someone who had been there with a DSLR and what their experience was.
Thanks for your effort.

I was there not too long ago and had no problems with my nikon strapped blatantly around my neck.

I was there in 2012 and carried my D300 with a 17-50 and a 10-24 lens. To get around the "backpack/camera bag" restriction I used a travel vest that I got at an army surplus store. Basically the same thing as a photo vest for only $25. I wore my gear and nobody said a thing. I've used the vest in Washington DC and visited museums and monuments also with no questions asked.

Enjoy. And don't forget to check out the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island.

Random shots on Oahu. You could wear out a camera on this island alone.

Here is one of the Memorial taken from an upper deck on the USS Missouri. The battleships were "nested" together and tied up to the small white piers that you see to the left. My dad was on the USS California (BB-44) that was here that morning and sunk. The next photo is arriving at the Memorial while still aboard the ferry. The last is the interior of the Memorial. It is a very basic and somber monument to the men who died aboard Arizona that day. Oil still "leaks" up to the surface from the ship.
