MYFOXNY.COM - An upstate man's attempt to elude police was thwarted, thanks to his young daughter.

New York state troopers went to a Massena home to serve a bench warrant for John Colby, 30, for bail jumping.

They say Colby's girlfriend answered the door and denied knowing where Colby was at the time. The couple's four year old daughter overheard the conversation and said, "Daddy is scared and hiding in the attic."

Police say Colby resisted arrest when they went into the attic to take him into custody. He is jail and expected to be back in court on Wednesday.

His girlfriend, Jessica Smith, 27, was also arrested on an obstruction charge. She was released on an appearance ticket and is due back in court later this month.

Our llitte granddaughter ratted out her mom and dad to my wife and me. She informed us that daddy took mommy to the doctor and mommy was pregnant but don't tell anybody because it's a secret. They had planned on keeping it quiet for a few more weeks.

I don't know, I just have a problem with taking this lightly. This kid would be a poster child for D.A.R.E., which encourages kids to inform on their parents for puffing a little grass. Did these guys not read "1984"? Whether or not the guy hiding in the attic is guilty is not the point - the point is, would YOU want your child to favor jack-booted government storm troopers busting into your house with a battering ram, over you and your spouse?

I find this sad and not a little frightening.

Apparently they didn't "storm" the house only went there to find the man and serve a bench warrent. They didn't ask the little girl, only the girlfriend and she lied as was evident when the 4 yr old knew to tell the truth and told the truth. In her mind it was only the truth, not squealing.

I would much rather have my children be honest and truthful than to teach then to lie just to cover up their parents failures.

I have no complaint with honest and truthful. I have a problem with TRAINING children to report what THEY THINK might be 'dubious' behavior on the part of their parents, as D.A.R.E. does. The news is full of instances where SWAT teams burst into the wrong property because of incorrect information, or information provided by a third party with some questionable motives.

I guess my weakness is that pesky old legal construct, "Innocent until Proven Guilty".

And thats is exactly what a jury of your peers is seated to decide. If this guy had nothing to fear, why was he hiding in the attic and his girlfriend lying to police about it in the first place? Probably not a warrant over traffic tickets.
I am not saying police are infallible, far from it, but I still believe teaching our children honesty is a far better practice than teaching deceit.

While this may be true I have learned when it comes to police never volunteer anything. There are lot of unscrupulous cops that will use anything to try to stick it to you. No doubt a jury of your peers will judge you and even if you are innocent you are going to get a lawyers bill that will put a crimp in buying any new photo equipment for a while. My feelings are if you are found innocent the state should pick up your lawyers tab.

What TRAINING has a 4 yr old had????? All they were doing was serving a warrant. I was in the Air Force and leaned not to volunteer also. That doesn't mean I can lie and do wrong though. Thank you MT Shooter.
