Hello from Colorado Springs, CO! I'm not new to photography, but I'm pretty "un-schooled". I really look for to accessing the wealth of knowledge available through Ugly Hedgehog.
I do have a question at this early juncture:
I have a 10-year old Nikon CoolPix 5000 10mp camera. It has served me well, but I think it's time to "upgrade" to a mid-range DSLR. There is a huge variety out there and I'm totally lost. I think that I would like to get close to 20mp, at least 16mp. Does anyone have a recommendation that won't break the bank of this retired, disabled, fixed income fledgling?
Welcome to the Hog russnmary. Take a look at the Nikon D3300 and the D5300. Both are very good and are a great place to start. ;)
Thanks a lot! I'll look into both.

Hi RussnMary...welcome to the hog. In answer to your question, how much is the bank willing to spend? That is the 64 dollar question. I, being a Canon user recommend the Canon 60D. It can be bought for around $1000 with kit lens included and its 18mp. But then again, maybe you are a Nikon user. If that is the case, i dont know which one to recommend.
But in any event, how about posting some of your work. We would love to see.

Welcome to UHH Russ. Glad you decided to join us. Thank you for the service to your country!!!
You don't always have to look at new. Money to be saved in refurbished cameras. Put back in like new condition with a costs savings. Only buy from a reputable dealer like The Nikon Store, Adorama, B&H or KEH. This goes for lens also. Hope this helps you. Enjoy the forum and have fun.

Welcome. I have an old Coolpix 100 and still use it as a backup to my D5200 and Leica M. Coolpix is just so handy.
